opening up exhaust?

On the exhaust on a second gen what obstructs the flow other than the main cat and the muffler? I was reading in the stickies that you could take your pre cat section out, but I was under the impression that we did not have a pre cat? Is there any obstruction between the exhaust manifolds and the main cat? Thanks for any help.

Actually we do have a pre-cat resonator. I never noticed it until I actually got under the car and looked. It is pretty restrictive. That's why my exhaust is so quiet.

I ditched mine, it had a hole in it anyways. But I do suppose that is why my car is a bit noisier than Sarin's. That and Flowmasters are pretty noisy too.

where is the precat/resinator located? Is it something that can just be un-bolted and replaced?

It's near the front of the exhaust, it'll look like a skinny muffler or like a fatter section of pipe. Mine had to be cut out and have a new piece of pipe welded in beccuase it was so rusty, I can't remeber if it did have a means of unbolting. You'll have to crawl under there and look I suppose. My car still passes emissions without it.

I will have to check that out...one good thing is I don't need to pass emissions where I live

Check on Ebay... once in a while there is a seller that has what
he calls a "racing" or "off-road" cat (read - straight pipe), I picked
one up about a year ago... still haven't installed it yet (so what else
is new, right?).

Is that just after the steel braided looking flex pipe?

Scott,
I think what you are refering to is the actual cat. I already replaced mine with a high flow cat. I am talking about a pre cat that would be closer to the exhaust manifold. In my fourth gen they are inside the y pipe. My exhaust guy can make me what you are talking about on ebay....thats what I am running on my fourth gen . So If I am not being clear: I want to leave the main cat on the car but I would like to reduce any restriction between the main cat and the exhaust manifolds.

Yup, I was referring to the actual cat... didn't know you already replaced
yours with a high flow unit... I thought if you were going as far as to cut
out the precat, I'd tell ya about the Ebay cat.

Yeah I have that 'cat' on my other car, the funny thing is when you look into it you can see right thru it...no obstruction at all...hahahahahhah. On my 98 it def made a noticible difference...I will be going to the dyno again soon so I will post the actual results. I really dont know if it would benifit a N/A second gen...the reason I got mine is because it was 40 bux, which is much cheaper than the OEM.

*off topic* I did run a 13.64 @107.3 while I had that 'cat' on my car...hahahah

my car doesent have this so called resinator, the whole system was replaced right before i bought the car, if some one wants i can pull my car up at work and take a few snap shots for reference after i get a digital camera, how ever that is the problem right now....little $$$ left.

i would imagine this "resinator" would be right infront of the oil filter making it impossible to pull from the bottom how ever i can pop mine out from underneath just fine.

Actually, that's the flex pipe that lets the exhaust piping move with the motor. This resonator/precat is actually right before the cat.

ok, I went down and talked to my exhaust guy about this and it does not look like the 87 comes with a pre cat....he looked it up in three different books and all of them showed no pre cats....on the other hand he was showing that the 85 (and maybe 86 I forget) does have a pre cat between the flex section and the exhaust maniold....hopefully this will help some of you but it does me no good
