yes i just got a 1.0 farad cap. now is it true the closer the amp is to the cap the more power? or is it the length of the wire from the cap to the amp matter? right now i have a 4awg wire that is about 1.5 feet long, is this too long?

this is a link to stinger but the same rule of thumb applies to most capacitors.

I personally wouldn't go with a length of wire longer than 18" from the amp. The closer, the better. The general idea is to get as much current from the cap as quickly as possible to the amp..the longer the wire, the possibility of more resistance.

Sure, closer is better. Not that a cap is going to help all that much anyway. What exactly is your reasoning for using the cap?

Why would the cap not help. Isn't the key to keep up the voltage at the amplifier? Sure you could run a H/O alternator or an additional battery, but why? Unless your amplifiers draw a serious amount of current or you have an SPL vehicle, the capacitor should work just fine in that application. You could even go up to a 25 Farad cap, that will make a huge difference. I have seen a 100 Farad capacitor start a supercharged Ford Lightning 3 times before needing to be recharged. Capacitors are designed to provide a quick burst of current, something a battery cannot do as quickly, hence stabilizing the Voltage. H/O Alternators, I'm just not really sold on for an everyday street application unless I'm drawing over 100A of current at a given time. OK, I'm off the soapbox now.

Caps are used because the wiring is insufficient in carrying the electrical load to the amplifiers. Get a low ga wire and you won't need a cap. As far as the distance. I would say the close the better.

dam,, so i just wasted my money then? because i have 8awg wire from the batt to the cap, and 4awg to the cap to the amp

I don't want to say that you "wasted" it.

But if you were to upgrade your stereo further personally I'd get better wire. Even if you make it 4ga from the wire to the car, it'd make a difference.

8AWG from the battery to the cap is going to be insufficient, especially if the 8AWG goes all the way to the trunk. You're not going to get the full potential from the cap that way. Definetely increase the B+ wire from the battery to the cap to 4AWG. BTW, it wasn't a waste of money. The cap will help.

definetly change your 8ga wire. Along with the cap you'll see improvement. As far as the lenghth goes, the closer the better. 18 inches to 2 feet with a 4 ga wire wourdl be perfect.
