Rusty fuel filler door hinge

I can't believe that the fuel filler door hinge on my 2001 Max rusted to the point it could not be opened with the inside button.... and the door had to be replaced and painted ...a $130 cost to me. I think Nissan should cover this even though my mileage is 59,000.......it should not happen. I am advised that the hinges should have been greased....but I don't see that in the maintenace manual? Has anyone had this problem and had the cost covered by Nissan or some other experience?

I'm sure others have had some similar issues with the fuel door. Mine is bent, I think, it's hard to open and a friend of mine has a 2k3 QX4 and his is bent and doesn't open right. I have also so seen a maxima with a black door(unpainted) and another maxima missing the fuel door. So I agree that nissan quality is lacking in yet another area.

Any hinge will rust over time if not maintained. You can avoid the problem by applying some lithium grease periodically.

it's not the hinge..I have had 5 cars before this, and each car was driven/maintained with less care than the max..and nothing ever rusted on those. It's just poorly designed on our cars...but yeah..keep them lubricated, especially in the winter..some WD40 will do the trick too

Just a shot in the dark, but shouldn't be covered under Nissans Corrosion Warranty for 60 months/unlimited milage?
