Is there any way to make the automatic in the Maxima change gears more aggressively. What are the best performance upgrades for an automatic. There is such a huge desparity between the stick and auto Maximas I was hoping there was some way to close the gap. Thanks in advance.

Valve Body Mod(AVOID MOBILETEK.COM) then a Torque converter.

I'm going to get the Valve body mod when I get the money.

I wouldn't recommend the drop resistor mod.

I would definitely recommend you read the stickies at the top of the 4th Gen forum - there should be plenty of info. up there regarding these mods. Welcome to maxima.org.

 

The Valve Body mod is anywhere between $350-$550. Torque converters, don't know.

JWT sells a TCM for the auto tragics... i have been looking into this since its cheaper than the valve body mod and basically does the same thing.

It allows you to have 3 settings (stock)(street performance)(racing) Instead of increasing line pressure thru the VB it does it electronically somehow...

Dont really know too much about this thing since i am saving up for a tranny swap instead.

It doesn't do the same thing. DR mod is hte closest thing to the Vavle Body mod.

I would get a stage 2 VB mod and a high stall TC. The TC goes for about 400-500.

 

nothin wrong with the DR mod as long as you get a tranny cooler. i've been running it without a tranny cooler and have had no adverse affects (not trying to make this into a which is better arguement)

 

there are a few people who have ran it and are showing adverse effects, i wouldnt take that risk, some people claim theres no noticeable gain from it.

 

My brother used to have a 1990 300ZX NA automatic, and he scored a part called an ALC (automatic line controller). I believe he got it from Stillen. The thing worked like a charm - ran until redline and then *bam* into the next gear. Unfortunately, I think it was a part for Z cars only....

 

A little heads up, I was looking into that also a few years back. Turns out it's not all that great. People bought it when it first came out and were dissapointed with it. Apparently it is hardly noticeable.

Just manually shift it, You can take it to the rev limiter if you just hold it in 1st 2nd then drive(OD off) then OD on

 

if its not a manual....then dont drive it like one. i doubt thats any good for the transmission

 

i have the dr mod, i mean it shifts harder but, i dont think im gaining anything. i didnt know maxima tuning is in glen cove!!!!!!!! im going there now

Tell me one reason why its bad.

 

I was driving with my friend's A4 yesterday at and he decided he wanted to open it up. I tried that overdrive trick and I was flying. We slowed down when I was doing around 120. I noticed that there was a strange smell though. I wasn't sure what it was. I never did it agian during our trip, but I was wondering if anything like this happened to anyone else. Thanks for all of your comments, you guys are really helpful.

 

I was running the VB mod on my 97' SE. Its creates a more agressive shift and helps close that gap "a little". I would also run the drop resistor mod once in while. I didnt like how rough it felt on the trans so I really only ran it for fun every so often.
VB mod is a good investment, but if you are still near stock the money might be better spent elsewhere

 

why bother, you've already made up your mind, you found 2 examples in that thread that have been doing it, then theres other examples that are contrary to it. id just play it safe and not want to blow my tranny, i guess that risk is more than worth it to you.

 

Manually UPSHIFTING will not harm tranny at all. Manually downshifting can harm tranny.

 

I made up my mind because no one can actually tell me a good reasonable technical reason why its bad, and well mzmgt is very reputable and hes got 200k on his tranny, and he says he does it all the time.. And well i do it too when i want to reach 6500 rpms instead of 6050-6100.

THe examples that are contrary are probably missing something like "yea he manually shifts, but he shifts from neutral at 6.5k rpms into drive"

 

im curious if theres any usable horsepower after the 5400 rpm range? anyone know?
