its not in the engine compartment like a 4th gen. its built in the tank and the access port is under the rear bench seat. it is definately more work then one on the firewall but its not that difficult. i changed mine around 45k miles and it was caked inside with sediment. just for reference i run name brand gas and have used a fuel system treatment so going with nissans recommendation of not it not being a maintenance item is just crazy to me.

youre in the wrong gen forum for that. 4th gens (95-99) use the 300zx fuel filter since its on the firewall. as far as i know, the OE maxima fuel filter part is the only replacement because of its location and configuration.

no problem. from what i do know about 4th gens, they were using it because it would last longer than the oe maxima part but there were no other differences like increased power or better mileage.

on the 00-03 maximas you can put a external fuel filter on. you have to rigg up the pump to bypass the filter, just using a hose. then you can splice into the fuel line in the engine bay and mount to the firewall. way more work than it is worth but definately possible.

hey sloppymax: where did you get the fuel filter for you 01? i tried to get one from nissan but they said they dont sell it because it is a non-replacement part. i have the same mentallity about replacing it as you do. it gets f***ing dirty and needs to be replaced.

by the way nissan doesnt call it a filter. its a "strainer" which i guess means now they can say it doesnt need to be replaced

are those the only 2 things required? i want to change mine. i can't imagine that the fuel filter/strainer, never has to be replaced.
