Here's a little tip:

Since the power outlet is so low, the power cord will get in the way of the stereo and climate control. What I did was use the velco that came with the radar detector and attached the velco (it has a sticky side) to the right inside foot well on the driver's side. I put the power cord inbetween the velco, so now the cord is pulled out of the way. Just sharing though it might be helpful b/c I remember reading somewhere about the power cord in the way.

or you can hard wire it to the power from the sunroof/light at the top... or if you have an autodimming mirror u can wire it to the power from there...

good call with the sunroof. that's how mine is wired. adds a little class, no wires hanging anywhere, disappears into the headliner.

radar

I hardwired mine into the sunroof....just a question too...I leave it on all the time, should I do this? I don't think it takes much power so it should be ok when the car is off...I think the battery might even cut off the power after a few minutes. Does anyone know??

Re: radar

I think it would drain your battery a little. It probably is not the same as leaving the radio on though. That's the beauty of tapping in the accessory outlet. It's only hot when the car is on.

how does one hard wire a radar detector?

What happens if you go through DC or Virginia? (I live near Philly, so it's possible for me, not so for all you SoCal guys)

basically what u do is u cut your cigarette adapter wire and instead of plugging it into the adapter u just connect the positive and negative to something in the car so it is a hard wire... the other end still connects and discontects from the unit like it always had... so when u go through a state like that u just disconnect the detector and hide it and the little end of the wire is sticking out and thats it... so its like connected permanent to the car but u can still remove the detector

Great tip! I never considered running it off the auto dim mirror or the sunroof.

How do you get access to splice these wires?

u have to take the plastic cover off... i didnt look at it so i dont know how to do it but probably u pry the plastic glass that covers the bulbs off and it should expose a screw or 2 and u just unscrew those and pull the whole thing out and the wires should be there... i didnt do it yet on my car but there are people here who have and they would be able to tell u exactly how to remove the unit...
