Replacing 5th gen radio - what kit did you use?

I got an American International kit with a pocket that has an AWFUL look to the plastic (doesn't match), doesn't ISO mount the unit, and generally doesn't fit as well as I'd hoped. The Metra kit I saw was even worse in quality and didn't even give you a pocket!

My 4th gen was so straightforward that I didn't count on having an issue like this. The car is a 2001 without Bose. I got the unit in with no problems, it just looks like @ss. What kit did you guys use to get an aftermarket radio in your 5th gen?

And yes, I tried Googling and searched this site, but that came up with an SQL error.

Which Metra kit are you referring to? 99-7416 is what I always use and it fits fine and Does have a pocket. To the best of my knowledge they do not make one without a pocket at all.

Hmmm ... saw one on eBay that didn't have a pocket, but it was prolly a wrong stock photo. Just found one here and it looks to be the same as the AI, which still isn't sufficient for me. I'm kind of looking for something more OEM and less plastic-y.

Although a bit more pricey, have you tried the "GXE" piece?

Just found it as P/N: 68750-3Y110 at jerry rome nissan for $98 minus whatever discount we get (12%?). It really is pricey. Might be better off getting one from a junkyard. The GXE's were fleet cars/rental cars so they should be plentiful in junkyards.

im having the same issue,
I too have a 5th gen 2002 non bose. i bought a radio from cardomain.com and they included a free kit from scoshe. the color matches EXACTLY to the trim in the car, but the size doesnt. it does say 2002 nissan maxima on the bag. so i went to a local shop and they ordered a metra kit 99-7416 it fits perfectly but the trim is black and totally clashed with the greyish color of the stock trim. (yes it has a shelf but a puny one. scoshe's was large) the dude at teh shop told me he painted his. i didnt ask what paint he uses because i was in a rush and was very disappointed. (also im stoopid) so if anyone knows what paint to use or has a suggestion on what kit matches better please fill me in ill post pictures if anyone requests

Find a two-din aftermarket deck and use the GXE radio bezel. It matches the color and trim and everything. Can't go wrong. See my website.
