Newbie questions - ECU

On an earlier post I asked about recomended upgrades for my '97SE, many people posted (thanks) and several said a group buy on an ECU upgrade was a no-brainer. Here are my questions:
- What is an ECU upgrade?
- What gains can I expect?
- Any maintenance issues (DEQ, other upgrades needed in conjunction, etc)
- Is the deal still available? If so, where can I find?
- Has anyone else done this?

Any help would be appreciated - Thanks!

What's DEQ?

Read the stickys/FAQ's, and check the GD forums

Quick overview = advances timing, remaps stock fuel maps, takes away stock speed limiter(usless if you have an SE) and raises rev limiter.

Personal expireience = Much more responsive mid-range power, and of course raised rev limit. The stock fuel maps are very rich, and these ususally lean it out a bit, as proven on a dyno exhaust sniffer and other means by other orgers.

No upgrdes are needed in conjunction, but to take full advantage of the rev limter, you will want to add a MEVI, if you stay with stock IM, than the raised rev limiter wont help unless you are FI or have cams.

Check the GD forums for the grouop deal.

Of course some of us have done this.

DEQ is our version of the Emmission Cops in Oregon.

I have a mostly stock '97 SE, 5 speed, standard emmisions. Does an ECU make sense for a manual tranny??
