help mt tach is goin crazy

The tach on my 1992 se is not working. Sometime the needle bounces around in both directions, but most of the time it stays at zero. On a rare occasion it may bounce around and then start working properly. Is the sensor on the tranny, or the motor? Im not sure were to check. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

When I confiscated my '92 GXE from my younger sister (she had parked it in NYC street for over 3 months without moving, in winter!), all the interior electronics were damaged. Passenger side headlamp was out and some turkey at a shady gas station took 12V+ from driver's headlamp and spliced it to the 12V+ of passenger, and then left the passenger 12V+ intact. I think this caused some weird-*** shorting or some sort, because it blew out the dash, all the switch bulbs, acc button bulbs, killed the fan speed amp, AND caused the tach to jump around like crazy.

I found a VG SE gauge with dead speedo and good tach, and I made a frankencluster with my GXE speedo (with the orange needle) and SE tach.

I was okay with it for awhile, and for illumination, I ended up getting EL reverse-glow overlays (instead of replacing bulbs).

Finally, I ended up finding a VG SE gauge with dead tach and alive speedo, so my dash is back to working condition. I did put bulbs from my many many dashes so that my needles would glow white against EL blue letters. Did I ever tell you guys that I love my gauge?

As for your problem, it could be myriad of things, but I think trying to replace the tach is probably the easiest method (but then again, I say easy because I took my dash apart so many times, I think I can now take out the speedo and put it back in in under 15 min... maybe I'll give up on this scientist job and go in to the world of gauge theft, if it exists)...

Good luck

Eddy7,

I just re-read your post. My dead tach symptoms were identical to yours.

My suggestion is to take up on MrGone's offer and get a new tach. I am not sure if I saved my pictures of the replacement, but I am sure anyone here (including myself) can tell you how to replace it. E-mail me if you need instructions.

I meant new tach as in MrGone's "working tach". Sorry for the brain-fart. It's late here in east coast...
