Tempermental audio buttons on steering wheel

The audio system control buttons on my steering wheel don't always work first time. Pressing harder or softer doesn't seem to make a difference which makes me think that a dirty connection isn't the problem. Anyone else have experience with this?

When press the volume buttons, sometimes it'll skip a track. It's so damn annoying.

I guess dust gets in there. Although all of my audio buttons work properly, the button that selects the various modes for the computer in the guages gets stuck sometimes... I got a can of compressed air and I emptied it on that button . It seems to work fine now.

ive started to experience the same thing. on some occasions, seems when its warmer outside that it works fine. when it cold in the morning, it has more issues. i wanted to disassemble and see if there anything to clean between the contacts. ill have to check the esm to see if they list an appropriate way to take it apart.

After three years, my buttons started acting up after I let the car sit for a few days for a business trip. I wonder if it's a combination of moisture and cold temperatures. I assume when you then drive on a regular basis, the heater dries any moisture in the car, until the next time I park it for a while.

Lots of people having this problem. Sloppymax, if you know or figure out how to disassemble the controls please post some instructions for the rest of us.

Same here. Problems when it is cold. Once car warms up inside, buttons then function OK.

Over the holidays I carefully sprayed some electric contact cleaner through the gap on the side of the pod and around the buttons while pressing them. I used CRC contact cleaner (which supposedly leaves no residue), but it did leave a white film on the plastic buttons that I was able to just wipe clean. My biggest concern was damage to the plastic and leather, but I wiped off any cleaner off the surfaces as fast as I could. The buttons haven't acted up so far.

have the same probelm with my buttons in the mornings and sometimes when really cold out, I cleaned my buttons with a cleaning wipe and it worked so far it hasn't acted up since. Try cleaning the button sometimes it's just dirt, dust and it could also just be moisture. good luck

It happens all the time in mine.... you can open it an seal it from moisture... I think that's the problem... once the car starts and runs for a while everything goes back to normal.....

I thought I wore my buttons out because I'm always channel surfing between the radio and the CD player. I'll try the contact cleaners but please let us know if there is an easy way to repair or replace the unit.
