About advancing the timing?

I've read that you can advance the timing on our cars by about 2 degrees to improve performance. Is this true?

If so, what are the results. Any negative effects or concerns?
Also, Does this have to be done by a Nissan tech or can anyone do it?
The last time I set the timing on a car it involved turning the distributer! That was in my old first gen Zcar.

the only risk you run is ping and kock
but using 91 -93 elimate this problem
My tech advanced 16 first to see if I get any ping. after that if am aready he said to bring to adv to 17. one step at time
the result was a more rev happy engine.
read this thread quick said the higest you can go is 20

In a 2k2 the highest you can go is 17 (2 degrees advanced from standard); I had mine done, works great, no pinging even with 91 octane (usually run 93).

Thanks, Did you have it done at a Nissan dealer or somewhere else? I work at an Acura dealership so I have access to mechanics who will do work on the side. My car is way out of warranty any way.
Also, the link takes me to a thread about pinging but mentions nothing about advancing the timing.

Is this harmful to the engine in the long run?

I was one of the first to do this mod back in 2002.

I havent done it on my 2k3 just because the VQ35DE already has known issues with pinging in stock configuration. Thats why i didnt bother with it anyways.

I've been noticing a little pinging with my setup. Anyone know what could be causing this? I currently have a UDP, Y-pipe, B-pipe, Intake and muffler. I run Shell's V-power gas. I recently had an SES light which was the result of bad coils. Do you think that the bad coils could have fouled out my plugs?

......And I think I was like the second. Still the best 'bang for buck' mod I ever did....half-hour shop rate at the dealership and 10 bucks tip to the friendly and enterprising tech who did it.

The advance to 17 degres BTDC is still and still no issues...car's running as as good as ever....
