Just picked up an '04 3.5SE 6spd, some initial questions
Hey folks, my mother just picked up an optioned up '04 Maxima 3.5SE 6spd today that had been sitting on the dealers showroom for almost 11 months with less than 30 miles on it. We got it out the door for $22500 with a $4500 trade on her sentra (lol), so we're nothing but smiles
Regardless, I've looked around on a few pages of threads but I'm still unsure of a few minor things:
-Is the extended warranty service worth purchasing? I didn't think so as it doesn't seem to cover anything the drivetrain warranty doesn't cover or anything that would actually go wrong (struts seem to be a popular item, I see). Local dealership wants $1033 for it, it's called the 'Gold Preffered' program I think.
-The owners manual lists to use premium fuel for optimal performance. Seeing as my 45-year old mother will be driving it who has been driving a GA16DE sentra for the last six years, I seriously doubt she will feel any shortcomings of power, but I do not want to create a condition where pinging will occur. On a (duh) stock car that isn't being driven hard, is 87 octane fine?
-What the hell is a propeller shaft? The manual lists to lubricate it when doing the oil changes, but I cannot for the life of me think of what it could be. I'm geussing it's one of those things the dumbestic cars that I work on don't have?
-I hate Goodyear RS-As. Anybody wanna donate me a set of something decent?
-Any warning signs to look out for as far as the struts?
Thanks guys!

If you are going to own the car for a long time the warranty is definately worth getting. As for the propeller shaft I have no idea and would like to know about that myself. More power to your grandma for driving a 5 speed!
-No.
-Yes, but fuel economy will go down.
-Only the Xterra has a propeller shaft.
-The RS-As are still better than the Potenzas that used to be on Maximas.
-No, just just fail, and when they do you hear a thunderclap noise when going over bumps.

I'll keep my fingers crossed on the struts
to me,
to me,
dear Blaise,
to me!
If it is for your mom, congrats to her. 89 will not kill the car for octane but would use 89 special as a minimum. As far as tires, the RSA, a tire is probably a tire to her. Wear them out and replace them when they serve their use. Extended warranty is something that you have to decide on how long she plans to keep the vehicle. Don't ping about the struts. Hope this helps. Sounds like you plan on driving it alot when your mom is not....LOL....nice choice she made on the 6 speed. Tell her to drive it and enjoy it. Question is though, when will you be picking up one of your own.....a nice Ember one.....hehehe. Be gentile on her car.

I'm not planning on driving the car when she's not around, I'm still young (19 today), so I get a lot more fun driving my neon which is just as fast (will be a lot faster once I figure out a few minor things) and handles a ton better. I'll definitely have her putting 89 in there from now on.
