screeching sound at start up =(

Okay so winter is here and now on these fafafreezing cold mornings, a screeching noise comes out from the engine bay. I believe it is the belts, but im gonna take a look tomororow while i take off the chrome wheels for the winter. Anyone ever have this problem? I have 51k on the car, have anyone ever replaced the belts this early on a 2002?

Sounds like the belt is too loose. Makes a sound kinda like a hamster on his wheel :P

I noticed the same sound coming from mine for the first time this morning. It was like 12 degrees out. Keep us posted if you find out what's wrong.

i had a problem like that, and my nissan tech friend told me that the belt was loose. sure enough, i opened the hood, got a deep 14mm socket w/ a swivel and extension, and tightened the ac,alternator belt and the screeching went away. I changed my own belt, and it didnt make a sound when i first changed it. BUt as it got colder, it became more and more noticable. very embarrasing...

Definitely the belts. You should inspect them for cracks or anything. That's more likely to accur during the winter months cause the cold air dries the belts

Your belts are slipping a little. Hit them with some belt dressing and you'll be fine.

Yeah, belt dressing does work. But eventually It'll wear off. I found myself using it about once a week till I got tired and just replaced the belts

The sound usually happens at startup in the morning, and sometimes even when im driving, if i push the gas a little it gets louder. but then after that goes away...
I'll keep you guys posted, its been fafafreezin in ny lately so i havent had the chance to take a look at the belts, but tomorrow i should be able to if it doesnt rain.

I just replaced my belts about 2 weeks ago and the first cold morning caused hella screeching. It was the ac/alternator belt, a quick retighten and it was good to go. There is a section in the FAQ's about replacing the belts. I got mine from courtesyparts.com at half the price my local dealership wanted to charge.
