Autoblog had that picture up last Monday... sure as hell looks like the Maxima, especially when you look at that rear window... Even the front looks like that Australian Maxima (the lights and the grill).

They're dubbing it a "concept" but I think Inifiniti might as well drop the current styling of the M and use this... in a hurry.

 

I saw the M45 at the Austin Auto show about a week ago. Nice looking car. It is supposed to be on sale in the spring of 2005. Starting price is 41K.

Apparently, the production model will be very close to the concept car... this thing is sweet (HIDs that turn with the wheel, constant-distance mode cruise control, LDW, etc)... not to mention the 4.5L V8

That's cool... makes me wonder what those options will go for though...

The "Active Light System" (active curve illumination) on the Benz is "only" a $1,200 option. "Distronic" (adaptive cruise control) was a $3k option last I checked though. Add a couple of more things and it could put that car into the $50k range, where I don't think it belongs... IMO, of course...

Well, I think it is officialy designated as an "M" since it comes with either a 3.5 or a 4.5... so I guess you could call it an M35 or an M45... honestly though, I didn't see a whole lot of difference in price between the two (but maybe I didn't quite configure them the same...).

Too bad the only way to get AWD is with the V6.

I would agree, its more related to the Z than the Maxima... its a F/M RWD chassis... like the Z... not the FWD chassis of the Maxima

Maxima doesnt compare to the new M

 

It's plain to see that it's a smooth progression of integrated styling which has already proven itself...G35 meets MAX/Alti motif. Of course RWD platform, rear lights, and overall aerodynamic styling credits are from the G, but the dual 4-port exhaust, front fascia design, C-pillar outline, and interior concept is conspicuously derived from the MAX/Alti platform. Excellent culmination from Infiniti IMO!!! I just don't like the huge "white" lights (if you look closely just above the rear tail lights)...don't know what they're intended to be used for...

But, overall, it makes perfect sense to placate "high-end/luxury" consumer demands w/ an integrated concept that already works...just top-off w/ luxury creature features/accomodations, boost power/strengthen structural design for added performance, and there you have it! Infiniti M-series! Although, I'm really loving that '06 Lex G400 sedan!!!

As to your question regarding the large white lights on the rear, they came about as a result of Infiniti 'painting itself into a corner' with the rear design.

The backup lights are two stark round white spots at the inboard corner of both tail light assemblies. They tend to become focal points, drawing the eye away from what is an attractive rear. Infiniti appearantly felt the only way to 'soften' the appearance of the backup lights was to use white lenses on the rear parking/turn signal lights, with an amber bulb inside.

Unfortunately, in keeping with the artistic flow of the rear layout, in which the trunk lid edges are part of the design, the parking/turn signal lights ended up in a functional location (high), but in a very awkward position appearance-wise.

I can comprehend the situation from the Infiniti designer's viewpoint, but I personally would have sacraficed a tad of the design flow and moved the parking/turn signal lights to a more horizontal position beneath the tail light assemblies.

Just my opinion.
