Leaking Alot, What could be wrong?

my 96 max has been leaking transmission fluid for a while. today i went to check the level of fluid inside and it kept reading different amounts. the last time i chekced i put the stick back in and pulled out of the driveway. it was rough putting it from park to reverse which it never was before, then finally it went into reverse. after i pulled away i checked if it leaked on the driveway. there had to be about a couple cups full of fluid on the ground. why is it leaking this much? what is the worst possible thing it can mean and would i wind up having to get a whole new tranny?

Automatic or manual? If it's manual, have you noticed a whining sound? If so, get under the car and move the driver's side axle around where it goes into the tranny. If more fluid comes leaking out, you've probably got a differential carrier bearing problem. There are threads on this every few days it seems. Worst case scenario here is a rebuild.

If it's auto, have you changed from regular tranny oil to synthetic recently? Sometimes this can cause small leaks. Shouldn't cause two cups though.

Other things - removed the driveaxles lately? You might have damaged a seal.

Best to find out where it's dripping from then come back and post.
