I'm thinking of installing a sunroof wind deflector. A friend of mine has one on his VW Passat, and he says it makes a big difference, cutting down on wind noise. I personally think they look a bit ugly, but I could live with the looks if the result is less wind noise.
Any experience?

In my dad's car, it does make a difference. It is up to you if you want it. If you are one of those who rarely open the sunroof and use it to get rid of hot air, then get it. Unless, if you are like me and open all the windows and blast the radio while driving, it won't make a diff.

It's worth getting.

I love the looks of the deflector from outside the car, and it is great for it's purpose of deflecting the wind. My only dislike is that it obstructs the view a little when looking out-from-in.

For a look, go here:

I took mine off because

it messes up the clear coat. I had a perfect outline of the rubber seal but the clear wasnt really damaged, just had lines. However, I couldnt have a normal tone conversion with it off at hwy speeds, so I put it back on.

My 98 SE didn't have one when I first got the car and it made a big diff. when I had it installed a few weeks after. I made sure the 2k1 I bought had it when I took delivery.

It doesn't look THAT bad, does it?

I think the looks grow on you. I personally didn't like it at first, but since I heard negative comments about removing it (e.g. wind noise would increase substantially) I opted to keep it on. I think it looks "normal" now, for me. It has grown on me.

When you get it put on, be sure it is TIGHT. Wind gets under mine at 100-105 mph and it rattles...

yes its worth it...

I have a sunroof deflector on my 2k SE and it does cut down on wind noise considerably. I also have a hood deflector. I think they both add to the sporty look of the Max.

wind deflector

I had one on my last car and now have one on my 00 Max SE. I like the look it gives and the wind noise reduction. The only thing that I really don't like about it is, that water collects under there when it rains or snows and the water does not get pushed off the car because it deflects the wind. So when the water dries out, you are left with all sorts of road grime dried on to your sunroof.

That's my only gripe too. Otherwise I love that thing.
It's $45 from courtesy nissan or you can pick one up from a local dealer although he'll probably ream you for about $65.
It's really easy to install. They use the same part for the Pathfinder and 240 cuz it came with brackets for all of them.

Yes it is.

It is worth it, it really helps out with wind noise.

This is an automobile, not a car. Cars come with deflectors,i.e. Kias, Hyndais, Mazdas, need I say more! Fine automobiles don't, Maximas, Mercedes, Porches, Bimmers, get the picture! I had one and took it off b/c it makes the car look unsporty and besides that it messes up the clear coat, I had to wet sand and buff the imprint out. If you want it you can have mine, it was on there for two weeks. It also reduces the amount of air that comes in through the roof!

This was a pain for me at first, but I now use a very soft sponge that I can push underneath the deflector while when I wash the car. It takes care of cleaning all areas underneath the deflector. Afterwards, I use a chamois to dry. NO SPOTS on the deflector, the car, or the sunroof!

And this is the ONLY reason that I didn't buy one of these (Mercedes, Porches, Bimmers). As soon as the Mercedes salesman told me that the Maxima was the most expensive cheap car that had a deflector, I immediately drove over there and traded in my Porsche on one!

Overall I like it.
It keeps the noise level down.
I actually enjoy the wind in my hair (what is left of it), and unfortunately you loose some of that with the deflector.
But my wife prefers less wind.

Well, I went for it. Dropped by the dealership yesterday, surprised to find the deflector cost only $87 Cdn, paid 20 bucks for install. Makes a huge difference in wind noise / turbulence. Thanks for the input, folks!

I'm glad you're happy with it. I didn't have a deflector on my 91 Lexus LS-400, then was told I could only get my Max ordered WITH the deflector, so was bummed out over the "requirement" to get it...but now I really enjoy having it, with less noise, less wind, and the entertaining puddling of water on the sunroof after a shower.
