I know nothing about exhaust systems, really, except that the smoother the flow, the better the engine breathes and it'll produce more HP.

Is it really possible to upgrade the exhaust system (street legal) without adding noise? What would parts cost?

Does anyone have any suggestions for parts they've upgraded and how it changed the sound? I'm not looking for the growl many people like. I like a smooth ride that doesn't attract attention and doesn't get on my nerves.

Thanks!

Yes, but it's not really possible to upgrade w/o ANY increase in noise. That would be very difficult to do. This is what I have. Cattman Y w/ an upgraded flex section(source of alot of the "bees" noise, RT cat w/ custom ball-joint flanges, custom 2.5 cat-back and a stock 2000 maxima dual chambered muffler(the most important piece to the quiet system)

Notes: Exhaust mods w/o the aftermarket Y pipe are probably not worth the increase in noise. Most people upgrade the muffler for a increase in hp, but it increases the noise level much more than the hp level(if at all)

Hey Jeff - did you get the 2000 muffler with the squarish tips or the two separate round tips? What did your source charge? Sounds like I've got almost the same setup as you and my stock muffler's about to die. Any advice?

the Stillen is a high performance that is quiet at least compared to my new Tsudo, I like the louder sound but I sold the muffler to MaxedOut97SE and he loves it, I have a b-pipe and it wasn't loud on my car, but on his car you almost can't hear it cause he doesn't have the catback like I do

trust me i have the world sport exhaust and it is too quiet, but it works. i removed the cat, and the resonator and it is still not as loud as the others, so u r going to have to get a ypipe, but it is a goo d exhuast to choose. it sounds like a stock m3 with no resonator and cat.

I got the finisher that covers both tips like a oval I guess. Not the two seperate tips. I bought it for $200 but they go for $150 nowdays. Just get it and have a muffler shop weld it in. No problems. Resonator was not needed.

It's kind of funny seeing white exhaust only come out of one tip on the mornings! hehe

I was told by the local pro exhaust shop that the longer the sound chamber is on the muffler section, then the more attentuation you will get on lower frequencies --

I used to have a Stillen muffler -- it was really boomy in sound between 2000-3000RPM -- Had an aftermarket exhaust shop put on a muffler with a longer sound chamber -- reduced the boomy sound -- They also fabricated a nice 2.5" inlet pipe into the sound chamber on the rear section --

Stillen, Greddy, and maybe HKS, etc -- all those "straight thru" mufflers are boomy in sound -- Because "BOOM" is what sells to the younger boys and girls --

Someone is selling their brand new Apexi for $220, but if you can't find him in the for sale section, their is a deal at Groupbuycenter.com for $360. I'd get the Apexi despite what other people say. It is an affordable and well performing cat-back system. I want minimal noise so I'm going the Stillen "SS" y-pipe and either the Courtesy B-pipe with the 2000 Maxima muffler, or the Apexi WS.

how does that "boomy" sound like? I bought a stillen one and waiting for it to come in. does it sound like a honda lawnmower bees in a can? or a deep low tone? which is the deeper? Stillen,Greddy, hks??

the maxima will not benefit from an exhaust (in terms of performance) unless you have done your y-pipe, cat, intake etc.. even then you woun't get anthing out of it except for cool looking, nice sounding, and maybe 1 or 2 horsepower, and LESS LOW END...

it sounds like you should not get an aftermarket exhaust unless you care about how it looks because they are all louder, just varying ammounts...

I just bought a b-pipe and y-pipe

I was told the b-pipe is more restrictive than the muffler itself, but I still might go with the 2000 Maxima muffler. I like the concept of increased low, mid, and high power. I just hope my Maxima will benefit from it as I have no idea if the ECU will recognize what's going on in the exhaust valve openning and closing.
