Oil change reset done by the dealer

Hey there,

When I took my car in for it's oil change some how the dealer reset my oil monitor back to zero. So now my oil bar say's 0 and tire rotation say's 3700 (SL w/ nav). Does anyone know if it's possible to to return the oil change back to the same has the tire rotation value ?.

Here's a little venting , why does the dealership(s) and nissan customer service rep's have to be so bad helping the consumer out, their very lucky they have such a great product.

Nottsman...I agree with the previous post...are they not suppose to reset it to 0 so you know when to go in for next oil change? I have a 05' and the oil change is at 3750 and the scheduled tire rotation is 7500. Not sure why you want back the old number....

I get annoyed w/ this too.. Not so much because they set it back to zero, but because they change the setpoint from 4000 miles (where I like to set it) to 3500 miles without asking me. I drive almost 30000 miles a year (almost all highway miles)and prefer to squeeze a little more mileage out of my oil changes.

Like DaOne and MAJ_Jimbo, I think the dealer is doing what he is supposed to do.

My major complaint goes sort of along with what kosd said. The oil changes are set up rather rigidly, and all other maintenance is tied to an oil change interval.

If I am on a leisurely coast-to-coast and back freeway trip in beautiful weather, there is no real reason to change the oil for at least 5,000 miles. If, however, most of my driving is in city traffic, or on unpaved roads, or I'm making lots of cold weather start-stops, I would prefer to change oil at 2500 miles.

But the rather rigid Nissan (other manufacturers also have this problem) oil change/maintenance schedule makes this a little awkward.

Guess I am nit-picking . . .

I've taken my 04 in 3 times so far for oil changes and the dealer reset the maintenance schedule to 0 only the first time. That was all they did to it. They didn't mess with my preset numbers or anything.

O.K.

W/ the nav system the oil change bar just keep rolling, 3750,7500, and so on. Because the dealer reset it to zero now it won't track that way.

What if you change your own oil, does that void the warranty? What oil do you recommend? I'm partial to Mobil 1.
Didn't mean to hijack the thread.

joe3906 - If I changed my own oil, I would keep a very accurate record of exactly what I did and when (both date and mileage) I did it. I would maintain this record the full five year length of the Nissan power train warranty.

Mobil 1 is a very fine oil. Nissan, however, recommends sticking to dino oil the first 20k in order that the engine parts be allowed to fit together better, making for a longer-lived and more efficient running engine. Seems synthetic is so good it makes it hard for the engine parts to make the small adjustment toward a perfect fitting of parts.

Of course everyone has a different opinion on when to change to synthetic. Some even use synthetic from the first oil change, and some reference Mobil's own literature saying Mobil 1 is best from day one (like anyone thought they might feel otherwise?).

I personally use Castrol dino oil for the first 50 to 70K, then switch to Mobil 1. But I would not be afraid to switch to synthetic as early as 10K, if synthetic was 'my bag'.

As usual lightonthehill is mainly correct. I disagree that you need to wait until 50K miles to switch to synthetic. I swithced to Mobil 1 on my second oil change at about 7,100 miles. Knowing what I know now, I would recommend waiting until the third oil change at about 11,250 miles, and would certainly switch at 15K miles.

My engine burned about a quart of dino oil every 2K miles for the first 4K miles and then essentially stopped burning oil -- the engine was seated. I now add about a half-quart of Mobil 1 between my oil changes and have 27K miles on her.

Before switching to synthetic, I followed the Nissan recommendation and did a dino oil change every 3,750 miles. Since swithcing to synthetic, I change oil at the maximum acceptable mileage from Nissan which is 7,500 miles -- the same as the recommendation for tire rotation. In another quote on this thread the good point was made about changing oil more frequently if you are driving in harsh conditions (dust is the worst) -- and that long distances on the interstate are relatively "easy" miles on the oil and the engine. All good points to follow. Once I pass my 5-year power train warranty, I may elect to push my Mobil 1 changes to every 10K miles (provided I don't drive in severe conditions) -- but I don't want Nissan to have any basis in the unlikely event I have problems when the car is still under warranty.

Joemax1...I guess it depends on your driving conditions...like it's been said, driving conditions will really dictate how hard your engine is working and how dirty that oil will get...i.e., dusty conditions like driving on dirt roads. If your doing just highway driving or mostly highway driving...your probably over doing the changes. Right now, for my warranty purposes, I plan on doing the 3750 as dictated in my service manual for my 05' Max. Thereafter, I may adjust.

Just depends on the person and how they want to maintain your car...bottom line...the oil is the life line to your car, like blood is to the human body. Just my 2 cents....later!

I'm in the same boat... I was out of sync of the Nissan recommend changes (initially I changed frequently, like at 1K, but then moved to 3000 mile intervals). Now that I've switched over to synthetic at around 8K and have 16.7K miles, I want to simplify my life and move to the 3750 oil change interval (to coincide with maintenance shcedule)... I don't quite feel right by not changing the oil every 3K miles, but I guess since 3750 is recommended by Nissan that it is OK. I usually drive in town (shorter drives on small-town highways with little traffic), and infrequent long highway trips (hardly any gravel roads).

Does this sound reasonable?

Monotaur...I think it sounds reasonable...at least it keeps you on track with the Nissan scheduled maintenance and on track with warranty issues, should they come up. Again, it all depends on driving habits/conditions. I had the same interval with my VW Passat, and when I check the oil prior to taking it in...it was pretty clean...and I did driving from Columbia, MD to the Pentagon...some highway and a lot of stop and go. Either case, 3750 will keep you on track with Nissan until your warranty is up, then I would change your oil appropriately as recommended or if you use synthentic...according to the recommended schedule with that oil...keep documents though...

Cool, thanks... I'll change to 3750 mile change intervals.
