One of my belts snapped on me b/c of a seized pulley and the dealer replaced the belt. Now, from a cold start up, the belt squeaks, then is silent. It sounds like its slipping, then catches. The service manager told me it will slip for a few weeks while the belt becomes accustomed to the pulley and vice versa. Is this BS or the truth? Any belt I ever replaced in the past did not squeak upon replacement. What do you think?

Sounds bogus to me. I've had worn out belts squeak a bit when moisture is high. Monitor the situation and if it doesn't go away, take it back and tell them to fix it. It shouldn't do that.

if this is anything like the belt with the s/c you are to retighten the belt after 100 or so miles. might want to check tension on the belt, if it's a little loose tighten it up and see if that cures it

Squeeking

I had my belts replaced a short time ago and they told me to bring it back to have them tightned after a couple of weeks. I didn't bother to take it back (short on time) Now I get the same Squeal and squeek when I start it. It goes in to get tightened this week (free). Hope that works. Do you get a squeal when the AC is on? Mine will scream every so often. Just my thoughts...

I'm taking it in early next week. The squealing got worse on a "cold" start. Not any worse when I turn on the A/C, though, if I start it "warm", I do not hear a squeak.

I have the same problem. 2-3 weeks ago I replaced the belts and all was just fine. But the last three days, each time I start the car, the belt is squeeks for a 1 second. Today in addition to squeeking I felt some smell of burnt rubber. How tigh this belt should be?

DRIVE BELTS

The service tech. told me that i should replace my drive belts ASAP because he said that he noticed cracks. I did a visual inspection under the hood with him and found no cracks. I asked him where the cracks were and he said you need to take off some of the shield covers to get closer. I didn't bother replacing the belts that day, but i wanted to know how you can tell whether the belt needs to be replaced. My car has 55K miles, and their is no unusual loud squeaking accept when humidity is high...which is normal i guess. So, anybody know when to replace the belts....or should i wait a little longer and replace them at 75k.

On replacing belts: they usually get a little looser after the first 100 miles or so; you have to retighten them. Screeching at startup just means they are loose, and then are able to catch afterwords.

If your mechanic says there are cracks, have him show them to you. Belts are inexpensive, usually, and it's best to be safe.
