Burning Smell under hard acceleration

i was on the interstate doin 60 and i decided i wanted to test how my new tires were at high speeds so i punched it and went up to 115-120. when i got to 120 i let off the gas and went back down to around 70 and then after a couple seconds i smell a burning smell.

its not so much a bruning fluid or a burning rubber smell, to describe it......it smelled like hot metal. like a hot engine.

ive done lots of hard launches and hard rolls from 60-120 or somethin and i never noticed any smell before.

i tried it again but from a stop to about 80 and i noticed it again. when i came to a stop i opened the hood to look for any smoke or somethin and i found nothing.

any idea what this could be, it was kinda nice outside (70's) so it wasnt like it was super hot out side. the gauge stayed right in the middle between H and C.

any ideas, anything wrong or am i jus bein over cautious.

i dont know of the tires ratings, they are the stock potenzas but i dont think thats it. i remember this happening with my other tires as well. and when i do a hard take off from a stop, i dont do it hard enough to really burn out the tires.

i have a crazy idea.... i think i started smelling this after i cleaned the engone with this greased lightning stuff but that was a loooooooooooooooooong time ago, like 8+ months ago, do you think it could still be on there. its strange because even right after cleaning then engine, i didnt smell any burning smell.

jus to be safe im changing my coolant again (last time was about a year ago come feb). any signs i should look for in coolant to see if something is burning (certain colors)

any other ideas on what it could be......i hope it isnt my tranny or could it be so, it never had a fluid change.

ditto for me, i remember this happened in the past but i forgot about it cause i rarely do aggresive driving. but i jus wanted to try out the wheels and rims, see if they were ballance right and to check for bad vibrations at high speed. i think ill do my coolant next week since i have 2 days off in a row....ill do a complete tune up and check the car.

oh and another thing which may help u guys, this is my 1st cycle of running 100% synthetic oil. Mobil 1 5w30. my previous oil was a synthetic blend. now im on full synthetic and its been in there for about 2200 miles. can this account for anything. also when i changed the oil, i did a mini flsh with some oil flushing additiive and added a bottle of "Restore" when i was done. can any of this account for the smell......remember the smell didnt smell like burning oil or fluids....just like hot metal type smell.

im lost

Maybe you just don't go fast often enough. So when you do the build up is being blown out.

wouldnt that be going out the exhaust and not from the engine bay?

Do you drive in front or behind the engine bay? Sometimes I can smell mine when I am easy on it for awhile.

what difference does it make, build up getting "blown out" goes through the exhaust you wouldnt smell it in front of your car.

flush out those damn raccoons....or neighborhood cats....

ok...seriously...maybe look at any small leak ontop of the engine. Or closely look for any burn marks near electrical connections, especially near the alternator.

Or maybe what ur smelling is a hot engine...most people don't run their engines alot of long periods of time....some components might just be suffering from heat soak <---stretch. Anyway, thought the neighborhood cats comment was kinda funny.

please tell that to my folks lol, they think im speeding all the damn time

"good H im gonna change my oil next week and im gonna use synthetic again, im pretty sure by this time around ill have removed 98% of all the dino oil which was once in the engine. im still not sure which vis to use. ill look into 0w.

vortech i jus wanted to know wha u meant by build up, like a build up of gunk or somethin. im gonna have to check that as well when i do my lil tune up. when i change my oil it is always pretty clean tho. do you know of any good oil flushing additives, i used a generic one last time. i may jus go ahead and use the tranny fluid this time since i have alot of it here. I bet i have to clean up my TB too, W/ my injen it seems to get dirtier alot faster, same w/ my filter.

keep the suggestions coming guys, this is all verrrrrrrry helpful

btw like i said earlier, can it be the tranny...im gonna look into a tranny cooler soon anyway.

dont use 0w20 its only used to flush the engine, i forgot to do it when i switched to syn, jsut put it like normal oil and run engine at around 2-3k rpm then drain it will its still hot, then after than put in some normal 5w30 and u would have flush 99.99% of that dino out
