RH cv boot replacement....Dan "the" Max

Looking in my FSM, it,s not quite clear to me (perhaps I,m too mad to understand......or dumb) but on the RH outer cv boot, does the inner boot have to be removed to replace the outer one. I was told before this and could not figure out how to do this so I took the parts to a garage that I trust and they did it for me. If I can do this myself, I would like to do so just for reassurance (even trustworthy garages make mistakes). The only tool I do not have is the one that tightens the band that comes with the new boot. Maybe I could rent one from Autozone. TYIA for any help!

You are correct, you have to remove the inner cv joint off of the half shaft to replace the outer boot. I tore the outer boot on the left half shaft, ended up just buying a rebuilt one because I couldn't get the cv joint off.

I don't think you need to take apart the inner boot. Rip the broken outer boot away and then hammer on the joint until it seperates.

My practice is to replace the entire axle assembly with a remanufactured unit... but that's because the CV joint is pretty far gone by the time I see the car.

You can circumvent the problem by replacing your damaged boot with a split boot (a/k/a quick boot). I tried the split boot only once and it was a hassle. I won't bother with them again. Some shops refuse to install a split boot because they aren't durable.

Looking at the factory service manual, I can see that it is impossible to stretch the new boot over the outer CV joint. Therefore installation requires removing either one of the CV joints. It looks like the inner joint is easier to deal with.
