How many RPM's at 80mph?

Hey Guys
I think maybe my tranny is messed up. I was cruising down the interstate at 80 and my car was at 2800-3000 RPMS. Maybe i'm wrong but it justed seemed really high. I have a 03 with an auto. Let me know if you think something is up or its in my head
Thanks

I know it seems like our cars kinda run pretty high rpm on the highway. I really noticed when i was in my buddies blazer over the weekend, that thing was never over 2000 rpm.

mph = (engine rpm * tire radius) / (final gear ratio * 168)

4th: 0.694
final drive: 3.789

mph = (2,800 x 12.93) / (2.63 x 168)

mph = 36204/441.84

mph= 81.94

wow 3000 seems kinda high...

60mph = ~1850 r/pm
70mph = ~2300-2400r/pm
80mph = ~2600r/pm

2003 6spd in 6th gear...

3300 5th gear 80mph, 235/45/ZR17, so it's like 3% higher i think.

The overall diameter of those rimes/tires is larger than using stock SE rims/tires. You guys have to keep in mind that Nissan Tach's are off, always have been, always will be.

It's not just Nissan. Most stock tachometers are off, and they respond slowly. They're more of an indicator for what just happened instead of what's actually happening right now.

I have a 2k2 6spd....i was wondering if anybody experiences a tach that gets inaccurate as the RPMs climb? for example.....In 1st gear I can floor it all the way up to like 6800 on the tach until I hit the limiter....but isn't our limiter at 6600? just wondering if others experience an inaccurate tach.

Also for reference:

1,500rpm - 43.89mph
2,000rpm - 58.52mph
2,500rpm - 73.15mph
3,000rpm - 87.78mph
3,500rpm - 102.41mph
4,000rpm - 117.04mph
4,500rpm - 131.67mph

These #'s are for 2k-2k3 automatic SE's with 17" rims 225/50R17's

Same here with my 6-speed... I can floor it through first into redline to what seems like 6800.. I haven't tried this much though since I treat my Max like an adopted child with issues. But anyways, at 80 i'm turning about 2600 rpms.

tothemax319.....have u tried it in 2nd gear or 3rd? I remember awhile back i tried it in 2nd and still the same result....approx 6800 till my car bogged down cuz of the limiter......i sorta assumed that this was a minor bug only in 1st gear since it whines up so quickly.....but i guess it does it for 2nd gear as well....

i am turning 2500-2550 rpms @ 80mph.....i can't really tell since the needles reading the tach are so small....

Yes, through the first three gears it spawns the same results. Since im shifting so fast due to the wheelspin through 1st and 2nd, it's really hard for the tach to keep up with what is really going on.

yeah true, i cant even keep up with what the tach is doing when im accelerating hard through first gear, because it' so short....as for 2nd gear, i havent even gotten it up to 6800 rpms!! i baby my car a little too much...haha, and i dont even think ive hit 90 yet, so i definitely havent seen the limiter for 3rd gear...(i believe 90 is where 3rd gear redlines?) and as for wheelspin...i can NEVER floor it through 1st gear, because the one time i tried to accelerate hard from a dead stop (when nobody was around), i barely could keep a hold on the steering wheel...and the wheels would not quit spinning until i finally just gave up and let off the gas...it does this in 2nd gear as well, but not as severe...i can feel my tires slipping all the way up to 50 mph in 2nd gear...does anybody else have this problem??

anyways...as for the original thread topic...my tach reads about 2600 rpms at 80...

2800-3000 sounds right....matters how cold it is outside with an intake I think.
