Installed 01 Tranny In 95 Now No Speedo

Just Got Finished Putting In A 01 Tranny In My 95 Max And Now I Cant Get The Speedometer To Work I See Where The Vss Is But I Dont See No Wires That Lead To It. Is There A Different Harness That Has To Be Purchased To Make This Work Please Help If Anyone Knows. The Only Thing I Noticed Is That My Backup Switch Had A Different Harness On It That Was Cut From The Junkyard That I Brought It From But I Just Replaced It With New One

You can reuse everything off your old tranny because everything will plug right into the 5th gen tranny (speedometer pinion gear, neutral position switch). My donor tranny's speedometer pinion gear was burnt beyond recognition so I had to use my original anyway. Just replace the donor one with your old one.

I WILL TRY IT AND SEE IF IT WORKS

Yeah, what VQ said. YOur old speed sensor can be inserted in the new tranny without a problem. The 01 tranny I got didn't even have a speed sensor, but instead it had a port cover which I removed and stuck in the old one.

Other than the aforementioned vehicle speed sensor, you don't need anything....straight bolt on.

better gearing im assuming? at least i do know the 3rd gear is fixed compared to the 4th gen 3rd gear death...maybe ill just swap the 01 tranny with valvebody then and gain a few tenths in the QM

well i went to car-part.com and found an 01 AE tranny with locking differnential and 40K in my own state for $750! thats pretty good i think, is that all ill need? if i get the locking diff and i dont have that do i need any differnt parts? and if it helps in drivability then why dont more 95-99ers do this?

It doesn't help with driveability unless you mean that the "feel" of the gearbox is sooooo much nicer. If you get a locking 01 AE tranny, you will need to get the driver's side axle. Congrats on finding that...they are REALLY hard to come by.

Your 5th gen tranny didn't come with a speed sensor? Dont all 4th/5th gen trannies use the speedometer pinion gear to read speed? Did the cover look like a factory piece?

what exactly does a non-locking differential and a locking differential mean?

Yeah. it's weird. The port cover is definitely factory. I just thought that maybe 01's didn't have the speed sensor in that location (read from somewhere else?) but others had sensors with theirs.

For reference this is a pic of my '01 AE. As you can see the speed sensor is to the right of the gearbox and below the axle input.

I totally forgot about this thread. I finally got everything running and went for a drive. I have no speedo or ODO. I've been searching. Do I need to get a 4th gen gear sensor/speed sensor? BTW, my reverse lights work.

No. He's wrong. The gear ratios are the same from 95-01.
