did they change the moter in 2000

I have a 1999 maxima and of course stock it has 190 horsepower what did nissan do to the 2000 maxima to get 227 horsepower is it a different motor or did they just program the chip? Also if they just used a different chip if i went to a junk yard and got the chip from a 2000 maxima can it be put into my 1999 maxima?

They changed certain things such as the intake manifold, cams, exhaust setup, etc. The ECU is also different, though this isn't the reason the car makes more power.

The engine codes are different. 4th Gen Maxima has a VQ30de while the 5th Gen (not 5.5) has a VQ30de-k. Many subtle differences but the main is the varible intake manifold that allows more top end power and is primarily responsible for the extra 30 hp.

It is nowhere near as simple as switching a chip. Some have done the manifold swaps, but they seem pretty involved. Read up around hear and you'll get the skinny in no time.

The biggest change was the intake manifold, as well as cams and a few other things. The ECU is programmed differently but you can't get more HP with a different ECU, you car won't even start lol. You used to be able to get a Variable Intake Manifold for the 4th gens that was imported from the middle east. I'm not sure if anyone is still selling the kits, they were good for 20+ hp.

Correct me if I am wrong on this but - even though the 5th gen 3.0s have more power than the 4rth gens 3.0s, the increased weight makes up for it therefore causing it to be just as quick as, if not slower, then a 4rth gen.

In other words, the power to weight ratio on a 4rth gen is better than the 5th gen 3.0.

yes that is true.....the power to weight is favorable on the 4th gen.....it's not until the higher gears (4th or 5th) is when the 5th gen 3.0 really shines

I believe they were only talking about the 2000 model. The 2K2 is considered to be a 5.5 gen not 5th gen.

Just ask any 4th gen owner, his car is faster than a 5th gen...

Just ask any 5th gen owner, his car is faster than a 5.5 gen...

Just ask any 5.5 gen owner, his car is faster than a 6th gen................

I'd say top of 3rd gear if it's manual.

So what are you trying to say? a 4rth gen IS faster than a 5th gen. A 5th gen IS NOT faster than a 5.5 gen. and a 5.5 gen IS NOT faster than a 6th gen.

Your comments made no sense what so ever and never did you even come close to any logical answer. We are now all dumber because we had to listen to what you said. I grant you NO points and may God have mercy on your soul. (Billy Madison) llololol

The motor is essentially the same, like said above in this post, that it was tweaked, change some cam, and some other hardware and ECU. If I remember it correctly that the 2k-2k1 has a 2 generation 3.0 VQ engine, since the first gen VQ engine came out on the 96-99'

To clarify my post... ask anyone if his car is faster than the next generation and he'll always say yes

<rolleyes>

... that means "because they can't admit the truth" ...... can't believe I had to explain that.

Well, as he explained, he is being sarcastic.

But then, my 4th gen is not faster than a 3rd gen, ask DaBoxSE what happened when I raced him quick off the line a few months back

However, I would love to get a 5.5 Gen, if I could afford it while I'm at school... those things are nice n smooth

In general it holds true that 4th gens are the fastest cars up until 2002, and then the 02-05 are faster than the 4th gens.

Not totally.. remember, the 3rd gen VEs have the 3.0 190hp engine as well, so they can be pretty equal, if not faster, than our 4th gens.

but yeah, the 02-up maximas own us 3rd/4th gens easy.

I suspect a 4th Gen with a Y-pipe and intake would give a 5th Gen stock a run for their money at higher rpms. A 4th Gen is also lighter.

nah, he's right, the totally stock 5th gen with the same driver won't be as fast as a 4th gen...

now the 5.5 gen on the other hand....that's a whole different story.

and my B13 will outhandle any of your rear-beam Maxima's!

2000-2001 *maybe*... but 2002-up, hell no. I think more than I/Y is gonna be needed, perhaps going FI?

Remember, not all cars are equal, nor are the drivers. Its not really the machinery, its also the experience behind the wheel.
But then, there's always the 3.5 swap
