I was roaming the junkyard yesterday,when I found a late
'91 or early '92 Maxima.Dead ringer for my car,minus a couple
of production changes.One of which is the guages.
Due to the fact that my odo. wasn't working,I grabbed
this one.Seems the main differences are, top speed is 145
vs.125 mph. & no airbags on my '90,also the O/D light is moved
to the left of the rpm guage airbag light resides where o/d was.
Installed it everything works.Had to disconnect the airbag light and o/d
doesn't work.
My question is did they significantly raise the horsepower in '92
to justify changing the top speed to 145?

 

Yes, they did. 92-94SEs have a different engine which produces 190HP.

Like Mizeree said, the 92-94 Maxima SE had a VE30DE instead of the regular VG30E so it had more horsepower, better transmission with LSD, 145mph speedo, that's all the differences that I can remember off hand.

 

You just put VE gauge into VG car. I hope you realized that your redline is different. If I were you, I'd take out the gauge, disassemble it (it's really easy) and take the old tach from your old VG gauge and put it into the new gauge that you have. I guess it wouldn't matter if you drove an auto, but if you are driving manual VG SE(did GXE's even come with manuals?), it'd kinda suck to take it upto your redline to realize later that you had a wrong redline label...

 

GXEs did not come in manual on 3rd gens. The redline doesnt really matter though because the cars have a rev limiter. He wouldnt be able to reach the redline of the VE cluster anyway (so no danger in hurting the motor from over revving).

and before its asked (because I know some are thinking it)...if you replace a 125mph cluster with a 145mph one your speed WILL read the exact same.

I have done this on 2 VGs I have had.

 

I've frankengauged 3rg gen clusters as well. Thanks for the reminder. Forgot to mention that speed doesn't get affected. I had white 145MPH speedo with VG white Tach in a gauge as replacement for my '92 GXE cluster, but had to put in a white 125MPH speedo because I went back to using the reverse glow gauge and I think the blue numbers look cool with white needles...
