VG Intake Manifold Modifications...
VG Intake Manifold Modifications...
Figured out and done by none other than Boosted Maxima... always finding something to do to make these engines better.
He hooked up a leaf blower to the manifold of kind of measure the airflow through it. What he found out was that the rear bank was getting much more air than the front. He opened up the power valve to see if there was a difference and didn't see much. So, what he did was started to cut away from material and put in a baffle with reliefes for cylinders 2 and 6 because they were a bit less. Overall it took him about 6 hours to set it all up. He's going to test it out and see what he gets from it and tomorrow I believe in the morning he said he'll try throwing in a write up on it. Hopefully he'll see some gains from it and such. For now... here are some pictures:
Here's where the major modifications were done:

He also smoothed out the lower plate a little bit:

And lastly... here is the shot of the manifold... just incase you guys weren't sure what I was talking about...

If it does give some gains send me a write up on it. If you don't have my email anymore I'll send it you again. I know of a couple of donor engines that I could have some fun on... Just in case I mess up... LOL
Thanks Mark for posting the pic's.
Here's the full story,
My engine is turbocharged and may differ from being N/A.
The adapor I made to go infront of the manifold tends to push more air into front bank of the manifold... the front bank actualy feeds the rear cyl... 1,3&5. The rear bank feeds the front cydrs 2,4&6.
WHen I hooked up the leaf blower it simulates air flow. You can go to each port and feel how much air is coming out. When I started the front bank was alot more than the rear and 1&6 Would have been getting the most air.
To correct this I removed the entire center section of the manifold which made holes at the very bottom which required the stainless steel plate on top. This helped but did not make them all even. The stainless steel baffle seperates cyldrs 123 and 456. The
U shaped cuts even the flow to 2&6 which were less with out the cuts.
Think of the end result being kinda like a Duel Plane manifold for a small block.
My next step is to take the parts off my 90 parts car and see what the manifold actualy did "stock" I'm betting nissan had problems with it and tried to add the ITV (butterflys) in the manifold to attempt to even the air flow problems out. I'll try and pull the manifold off this week and test it. I was going to send Mark a reverse elbow for his turbo car so he can be intercooled till I found this problem. now I'll proably have to send him a elbow and a modified plenum.

Do you have access to a flow bench? It just doesn't seem that accurate, but I can see what you mean about being boosted vs. NA.
Guess we'll just have to wait and see what the rollers say
What is the black stuff you used to attach the new stainless to the aluminum?

for the thing boosted maxima did you could rig up a small MAF and get a voltmeter and just measure until all of the ports gave the same voltage, then you would have more accurate numerical data.

U should also have engine heads with rotating cams to simulate the effect as valves close/open, between 2-6000rpm. And as already stated, some way to quantify the flow...
Its nice to hear of the results; pls give also results without turbo.
