I am wondering how far do you guys reach down the hole to clean this thing. It's really hard to get deep down in there with the butterfly plate there. I shinned a flashlight down there and my TB is loaded deep down inside. I was able to clean up to about a couple of inches past the plate (as far as the tooth brush could reach). I've noticed a much better response at low rpm’s and my rpm’s don't drop like bowling ***** when I shift. I'm wondering how much better the car would run if could clean the whole thing.

do you have to remove the throttle body in order to clean it?

 

^nope. Just some carb cleaner and a towel. I use a small diameter dowel rod with a towel wrapped around the end that I can hold onto. Quick and effective.

 

I always remove mine. takes only 15 minutes.. and then its like new, and i throw it back on.

 

When you remove the bolts, how tight do you put them back on? Does it need a good snug fit or a ft/lbs?

best way to learn is to just dont be afraid, go in there and start takin it apart

 

take it off, clean it, then tighten to what it was before. DONT over torque it. just tight enough that its nice and snug. just get down and dirty and remember what parts go where. pretty straight foward.

 

Certain things need to be toqued to specs.. things like this you can get away with.
I just tighen it about 1/4 turn past when it gets tight. Making sure not to overtorque it. (strip them out or anything)

 

Did mine and my friends 98 Max. Notice big difference. Didn't have to take the TB out. Took a rag and a screw driver and cleaned it with some TB cleaner.

 

The main point is to clean the butterfly and the area around it so it opens and closes without interference.

If you want to, you can take the whole TB off. This will let you clean the butterfly plate from the other side as well as get a little deeper into the intake manifold.

If it's the first time taking off the TB, you may want to stop by the local dealer and get a new TB gasket first. The old one tends to fall apart when you take off the TB. It's like a $5 part.

 

what's the butterfly?

 

look in that hole (TB). when you push the gas pedal that coined shaped piece opens up and allows air into the engine (intake manifold). this is what i believe is refered to as the butterfly. see the bar going across that is screwed into it with 2 screws.

cleaning the tb was the best mod i ever did, well the only one i really felt

 

how often sdhould you clean it? i just wonder how long the benefeits will last for...mines probably all dirty, im getting a rough idle sometimes and some lag. there's a way to clean it without taking it off?

I cleaned mine earlier today along with my K&N filter, and the car is way more responsive..
