humming sound from wheels... bearings?!

hi fellows

i have a humming/wuu wuu wuu sound coming from the front wheels. has anyone had this problem? could it be the bearings? what could happen if they don't get changed soon enough? can the wheels lock up on me?

any ideas? gotta take a trip to NY on thursday, so i wanna have the car in good shape for the trip.

You know its a wheel bearing if you hear a consistant humming, more noticable at freeway speeds. You can determine which side it is by listening to when the noise gets loud as you switch lanes, or take a sweeping turn. Although you can usually drive on a broken wheel bearing for a little bit, I would suggest you get it replaced before your long trip.

Or it could just be noisy tires.

My car had the same problem. Water in the tire was mine. My dads problem was that the CV shaft nut was loose. Check the nut first.

Mine are from tires, back tire hum at crusing speed due to lack of rotation, now I have them in the front and they continue to hum. Rotate your tires first and see if the problem still exist.

Is this only happening when you are braking? My experience shortly after my brakes were changed is that they make a humming noise when coming to a stop, this can be because of the quality of the brake pad used. If it's your bearings, it would probably be more of a grinding noise, I have had this happen twice with two different vehicles, one of them being my Infiniti I-30t. Also, yes if it is this problem, you will do more damage by continuing to drive it. Good luck.

i know the noise is not coming from the brake pads. i've had the car for about 2 months and did not notice the noise before, maybe i just had the music too loud. it could very well just be noisy tires but i thought continentals were a better quality tire. do you still get tire noise from good quality tires?

Tman - how do you get water in the tire? driving in the snow or something? if that's the case, i did drive in the snow in my last trip to NY.

Wisky - the noise does not really increase or get worse when i turn or change lanes. the humming is really the only symptom.

thanks for all the replies!

Any idea as to what would happen if I drove on a screwy wheel bearing for nearly 2 years or 40,000 miles?

Filling up air from a compressor that isnt drained regularly. Condensation ends up in the compressor and if it isnt drained periodically it ends up in your tires.
