"Teh" dreaded shimmey issue?

Quick question here.

I had my custom modded RSA tires (chuckle, chuckle) replaced a few months ago and now all of a sudden after about 3,000 miles I am getting a real bad shimmey between 55 and 60 miles per hour. I have been reading some of the post here and just wanted to know how much hassle the people here who have had the same problem had to go through with the dealer to get it fixed. When I called the dealer yesterday they suggested a balancing of the tires (for a great low price of $60.00 bucks of course) and I really do not want to pay to have this done if it is a known issue out there.

Any suggestions or words of wisdom?

Thanks

can you look at the inside of your tires for cracks? if you have something like that, you can call goodyear and they will hook u up. if u scroll through the pages here, you will a few threads about the shimmy and what people have been doing.

If the shimmy started with the replacement of your tires, I'd strongly suggest it's the new tires.

The only shimmy issues related to the car itself (AFAIK) are the steering rack tension and defective struts. Either is possible, but the most obvious is wheel balance and/or out-of-round tires, and those things should be looked at first.

Your Maxima is sensitive to steering inputs, so a tire slightly out-of-balance will show up more on this car than on some others. Have your wheels balanced on a Hunter Road Force machine ... most others won't show some of the conditions that affect critical balance. If that doesn't cure it, you have a case for getting the dealer involved.
