Steering wheel audio control problems

Hi,

I have a 2001 Maxima GXE and am having trouble with the controls for the audio system that are right on the steering wheel.

The issue is that the controls are only working intermittently and it seems like they start working better as the car is driven more (the longer the drive and the more times I try to press the buttons the better they seem to get).

Since this is one of my favourite features I wanted to get some feedback if any of the experts out here, know what could be wrong or have any ideas?

I will probably get it checked up on the next servicing but wanted to know if it is possible to do something on my own as well.

Thx,
NK

I have the same on my Moms Honda.. I think those buttons wear out, and once you start driving, contacts get warmer. Or there could be some oil residue or moisture.. But i think they just wear out.. Try to take it apart and see whats inside..

Although this may seem unacceptable, I think this is normal on our cars. I have the same issue. To me, it seems as the car gets warmer (as the post above also states), I can finally use the controls. Are the controls, including the cruise buttons, supposed to light up when the headlights are on?

No, at least not on 5th gen. 5.5 may be different, but I doubt it. I would love to take apart the controls on the steering wheel, but I can't find a way to take the controls off without taking the whole steering wheel off/apart.

So has anybody gotten this fixed and know what the issue is?

What seems weird to me is that the cruise controls button seem the same but they never have the issue - probably because that would be very dangerous and Nissan might get sued.

Cruise buttons are used a lot less often. I think the problem is some carbon build up at the contact point of the buttons, it used to happen to my old Sega Genesis controllers all the time when I was younger. Wiping down the contact points with rubbing alcohol and cleaning that up takes care of the problem, but I can't easily get the controls open so I haven't touched it yet.
