How bad can a torn CV boot get?

How bad can a torn CV boot get?

Well, title pretty well states it.

Ive had a torn CV boot for a while... and I think it might be time to replace it, And mabye the axle... When im going about 70+ on the freeway the car shakes... a Lot. and ive goten an alignment so I know thats not the case.

If I do the work myself (easy) does anyone have a good idea how much the parts will cost?

The worst it can get is it can seize and break right at the joint.

i drove on a broken cv boot for about 4-5 months. eventually when you make hard turns you will hear a loud clicking comming fomr the axle. at that point you should probably replace it. i bought a used one off a guy on the org for $40 and he helped install it too.

You will do damage to your CV joint with a torn boot. If you find it and replace the boot right away, you can avoid most of the damage. Since you have been driving for months like this and you feel a shaking, the joint is bad. Replacing just the boot will do nothing for you; it only holds the grease in and the dirt out. With several months of torn boot, there is no grease left inside, but plenty of dirt. To have a shop do it'll cost a couple hundred bucks, most likely.

A friend of mine ignored the clicking for almost a year. Finally the joint went out and the car coasted to the side of the road.

ya i would get it fixed, im finding alot of people do it them selfs and its a pretty cheap repair, i would just do both sides.

Get that axle changed asap. Once dirt gets into the boot, the grease can no longer lubricate the bearings properly.

Once that boot is ripped, its time to change it.

So today I discovered that both of my boots are torn. Should I just change the boots? or the whole axel?? My car has about 201K, but I barely hear the rattle when turning. I hear doing the boots can be hell for someone who has never done em before?

Getting the CV joint off the axle shaft is a real real pain in the rear. If you want to change just the boot you need to do this.

You can get a new axle for about 60 bucks. A boot costs what... 10 bucks?

For 50 bucks more you save a LOT of headache. Change the whole thing

yeah change the whole things. it is very simple to do. plus you got over 200k on your car. who knows what condition the axles are in.

I wouldnt change the boot at all. The grease will still have dirt and crap inside of it. Its actually easier to change the entire axle. I did both of mine.

I guess axel swap is the way to go. i called around today, but nobody seems to have the passenger side. Everywhere I called only had the drivers side, Oh well, i'm gonna look online to see what I can find, plus there is gonna be shytty weather the rest of this week, blah any suggestions about online axels other than raxels?

I got my driverside replaced for 160 parts and labor. Well worth doing the whole axle it will save you alot of headaches

I got mine from Autozone (reman) $60 and a lifetime warranty. They shipped it from another store for no charge. Passenger side.

I paid $65 for someone to install it. Too much rust for me to get it loose.

Total: $125
