New wheels and questions

I'm seriously thinking about getting new chrome wheels (Veloche verizo's) for my 2005 SE.
I have two options sticking with the 18" size I have now or dropping the wheels and tires down to 17's for a better ride.
After reading all the shimmey issues the big question is, do I even touch my wheels or tires, am I opening up a Pandoras box?
I've never had any shimmey problems but reading about them is making my decission a tough one. Should I just leave it alone and not risk it?
Thanks,
-Louis

i went with aftermarket chrome 18's. I kept the same RSA tires on the car. I havent had a problem. I even went for my 7500 mile check up at the dealership, they balanced the tires and the car is running great afterwards. which is surprising after a visit to the dealership! LOL

I just wanted to let you know what I did, I order 17" rims with winter tires for my 04 SE
and the ride improved 100%. I went though TireRack for the set. I was not going for style but better winter driving. The stock tires on the 04 SE are junk for winter driving.
Hope this help...

Hi, I am new here and this is my first post. Thanks to all information regarding the Maxima. I have a 2005 SE and I would like to know the specs of the 17" rim that will fit my Maxima like the SL, i.e. offset etc., so that the wheel does not protrude outside the body. What rims will qualify? Thank you all.

The SE ships with 245/45-18s... are you looking to move down to 17s?

Offset is 40mm btw.

Y know what'd be sweet? fender flares and wider wheels, like an M3

I have 18" chrome rims, Eibach lowering springs, Stillen anti-sway bar and front strut bar. I have had no problems with this set-up and I do alot of driving. Later Ramberg

Thanks, Viguera. Yes I like to have a second set of wheels with 17" rim like the SL. Don't want to get the ones that extend outside of the fenders, just want them flush.

But you're in SFO... outside of the earthquakes (and the fact that God seems to have it in for CA lately) you guys get no snow and your roads are smoooooooove when compared to ours... moving to 17 I assume is for ride comfort, rather than because you have to...

I'm eyeballing putting 18s on my SL... if Old Man Winter ever dies.

The SL ships with 225/55-17, and they should fit on the SE without issue. As long as you stay away from the cheap-o ContiTouringContact...

You are right. I'm in for comfort. I rarely do 100 these days and I like to be able to change from performance to more comfort and vice versa. I would prefer aftermarket set of rims & tires that have the same specs as OEMs.

The hell with that... if it never snowed here I'd be riding on 26"s...

Or maybe not.

I think people here have gotten away with 18x8.5... not sure if you can find wider than 8s on 17s though... I guess it depends on where you shop. I'd stay away from 17x7.5... I think they're too skinny for the Max and wouldn't look good.

A good place to start (outside of the wheels & tires folder) would be tirerack.

Have fun.

I personally would not go smaller, if you are going to put out the $$ for new wheels at least go with 18's. I would assume the ride with 18's would be fine, I have 20's and although the ride is a bit rougher it's definitely managable. I went back to stock for a bit and granted it was nice, I guess it just depends on how picky you are...
And if you don't care about looks at all go with the 17's...
2 cents....

I like to explore the softer side of the Max and still be able to go back to 18's. This way, I have the best of both world.
