what about our top end?

THIS IS NOT A RACE THREAD !!!

my friend has a 99 accord sedan 4 banger vtec with just an AEM intake. thing got 100k miles and its auto.

my max is auto as well and i got intake + y pipe.

now here is the deal :

everytime we race from a dead stop, i toast this guy real bad, i mean reallllllllll bad, even though i have a lot less traction off the line, i still manage to put 1-2 cars on him by 60 mph. but everytime we race from a roll, its a looooooot closer, especially from 40 mph. his thing can keep up with me a loooooot better when we go at it from a roll. sometimes he is dead even rollin next to me and i just barely start pullin away and maybe put 1 car on him till 100 mph.

whats the deal here? the max has no top end or VTEC really owns us ?? i thought the 215+ torque would toast this guy even wrose from a roll but it has never happened. discuss power band please

sounds like VTEC is good for the top end. its weird tho, when i had a rental 01 accord I4 auto with VTEC, the top end on that thing sucked @$$, barely got to 120 and took so damn long. maybe the intake had something to do with it.

I read those intakes help top end (not used much) at the expense of low end torque (always used)

What you descibed is exactly what is expected. Going from a roll will be more top end. While from a stop, torque will make more of a difference up to a point. JWT ECU and MEVI or -k VIM will help a lot.

A 40mph punch in an auto Maxima SUCKS!!! The reason being is that's when our second gear starts. At 30 or 50, you would make a bigger difference.

My friend has the same accord but w/ header and I smoke him from a stop but it's closER from a roll, but it's still not close, there's car lengths between us. That's where all their power is, vtec is the best going for them.

It's kinda like, we have the most power from 2000 to 5800 They have the most power 3500-7200

40mph is a bad speed, hold it in 2 and race from 55mph, that will put you right in the power band and you should pull away right away.

the accord vtec really kicks in after 3.5 or 4k rpm, its more of a top end car, where as a maxima does really well 0-60 (low end)

well from owning an VTEC accord and a maxima there should be NO contest - intake or not. My accord could get owned by a golf cart off the line. Top end isnt bad (at least from 35-75ish) the VTEC makes a considerable difference. However unless you do the H22 or F20 swap you only have a single cam VTEC - which barely does anything for performance. Its purpose in a single cam accord is merely for gas mileage.

Now dual cam VTEC - thats a different story.......... about did the H22 swap myself and not bought the max. Good thing i changed my mind.

I have a friend with a 98 Accord VTEC V6 auto. He bought the car in December and it has about 85 K on it and has been maintained. Its stock. He keeps ragging on me that he can take me and wants to try it from a rolling start. He drives like an old man and would probably pull the pin at about 80 to 90 mph.

I have a 95SE 5-speed with 57,500 mostly highway miles. My car runs well. I have a K&N panel air filter and a Budget Y-pipe and know how to drive.

What mph starting point (from a roll) would be to my advantage? I am sure I can beat him from a stop and any starting point he wants to begin at.

Two old farts going at it on the highway, lol!

well when you start from a roll the accord will almost always have an advantage bc most likely his RPM's will be close to optimal range for the VTEC to kick in (about 3 grand) - so he most likely will take off from there.

i cant really speak for a V6 VTEC bc mines a four banger but the concept remains the same being a single cam.

I won't beat up on you for not knowing the reason behind this. Let's just say, this is why us 4th Genners looked for ways (long ago) to boost our high end power. This why everyone scrambled to get some sort of VI installed on their motors and adding ECU's.

Clee has a good vid of himself racing a V6 Accord VTEC and the were pretty close until they got up into the high rpm range. The Accord started walking him. With the VI and ECU, the outcome isn't the same.

can you trick him into 15 mph roll ? lol, you could punch 1st, shift to 2nd and really take advantage of the vq

Yeah, I could trick him into that and maybe talk him into quitting at 90 at which time he would be filling his pants, the feather in his hat would be trembling, and I would be still high in 3rd gear where my y-pipe pays dividends.

I lost to a s2k also, but all i can say, it was a close close match up with me.
we were side by side until end of 2nd gear, than on 3rd, he started to pull about 1/2 car and after that, 1/4 mile ended.

More like 205 ft lbs for the Maxima and the 98 VTEC only has 195. Granted it has 200 hp, but I am pushing more that at say 6K with my y-pipe and the Honduh is 275 lbs. heavier.

OK, this is not a race thread, it is simply an intellectual debate on the relationship of Maxima vs Honduh top ends, torque and time to attain maximum velocity, lol!

Why would the Honduh manual call for these VTEC V6s to use 87 octane fuel, which is what my friend uses. I've never used 87 octane in my Maxima once and don't intend to unless I am almost out of gas and thats all they have and only 1 gallon then.

On thre subject of 40 Mph punch, the 6th gen auto has tons of pull from this speed. recently at about 30mph getting to an onramp, the car chirped its front tires as it surged to 55-60. 5 sp Auto, mind you.

They have a mild compression ratio of about 9.4:1 and don't have knock sensors. They actually produce less power running on premium because their ECU's aren't tuned to adjust to it.

Yo Mike, where do you guys race??? I've been at your side of town a couple of times lately and hasn't seen your Max anywhere.

If you haven't, try turning off overdrive then punch it. Or put the tranny on L2, then punch it. But this is the kind of stuff that kills auto trannies quickly.

I thought I saw this discussed a while back - manually shifting an auto doesn't hurt the tranny, all putting the tranny in L2 is keeping it in that gear, nothing more.

rmurdoch - that's cool to hear that you still get enjoyment out of that kind of stuff, more power to ya.

Oh no, manual shifting doesn't harm anything. But racing and manual shifting is a different story.

ok, I wasn't sure of what you were implying. But then again, racing any car puts wear and tear on it (more than normal driving anyway).

Everyone knows our top end sucks, thats why guys swap out for MEVI's and 2K Intake Manifolds... why are we going through this again? Honda VTEC engines are KNOWN to have all top end power.. our weakness is their strength and vice versa.
