Has anyone kept their Bose and been happy?
I got a Bose head unit from a later model Max with the CD and Cassette in one. I know of a guy in Florida who repairs all the Bose units, head units/amps/etc, and he will sell me an adapter that lets me hook up the new unit to my 3rd gen. I still need to get the speaker amps fixed, but I was wondering if I should go ahead with the stock look or just change to aftermarket for the best performance? Has anyone else stayed with Bose and been happy with it? Thanks.

I did with my 92GXE. I repaired the CD/tape unit and repaired all 4 amps. They sounded great for what I needed it for which was a nice sounding factory radio. It sounded much better than a cheap cd player and cheap speakers.
If you have the money obviously aftermarket is the way to go but I was just as happy as can be with the Bose because I liked the factory look and didnt ahve to worry about anyone stealing it.

my unit broke once, cost me like 125 to fix it and it broke down again 1.5 years later. I have a pioneer707 right now and looking back, i say you save yourself the headache and spend a little more on an aftermarket and enjoy that for many years.
When our cars were new in the late 80s and early 90s, Bose was a great factory stereo.
However, compared to what you can get now in the aftermarket relatively cheap, it doesn't compare at all. Not to mention the reliability of Bose is pretty low, based on the results most people here have had with it.
If you can't afford something new, I guess Bose is fine. Otherwise, just replace what you can.

Our cars are 10-15 years old. Paper speakers don't have long shelf lives, especially in hot climates. Having heard Bose factory systems in different Maxima's I can say I was impressed. Obviously, not competition but they did have a great sound. If all I had to do was repair the amps, I would have done it. However, those speakers were shot. Some nice Type R Alpines, an Alpine HU and a 4 channel amp... I'm all set. Just strong enough, and not too obnoxious.
Working Bose coupled with a limited budget = keep it factory.

I must say that I am impressed with the Bose system in my car, even with its problems!!
My rear speakers pop, probably blown and every time I touch the **** on the headunit, it sends a popping & static noise thru the speakers. Probably a short somewhere.
As soon as I get some $$$ I will be installing a decent Alpine or Kenwood headunit and Infinity Kappa's all the way around!
