tranny noise

so i've got a 5spd tranny with plenty of miles on her, and lately the whine has gotten louder. while the car idles in neutral the whine is most noticeable. the noise gets louder as i accelerate in gear, but the motor drowns it out a little with the midpipe and k&n. when i press the clutch to the floor, the noise completely disappears. since the noise goes away when i engage the throwout bearing, i believe this is the input shaft bearing making the noise. does anyone know how much work goes into switching out this bearing? should i find a junker tranny? am i even right about this bearing? help is appreciated.

is it a low grinding noise, espcially noticeable in 1st?

have you done anything recently (axle work, etc) or is this just out of the blue?

i had something similar, and i think it was my differential gear bearing (since my speedo eventually stopped working). i ended up buying a 72k tranny from a yard b/c the noise was driving me crazy

uh, i went to pick up the car from my mechanic's shop, and 1 2 3 gears are toast. put it in gear and the gears just spin w/o engaging. new tranny time...

my '91 has been doing the same thing since i bought it in November of '03, with 164k on the clock. now has 180k and is slightly more noisy. my mechanic suggested mine was probably the input shaft.... before i purchased the car my speedo did not work as ghostmax mentioned, but i believe it was a result from when the clutch was replaced. i'll be interested in your results.
