Checked VIAS and did Bose rattle fix over the weekend...

....and I'm a satisfied customer.

Checking the VIAS was really easy. I slid the throttle body back, and the VIAS came off easily with just a little Liquid Wrench. Mine was okay - very tight with no movement. No fix necessary...nice.

I used Housecor's method for fixing the Bose rattle. I have to say, this is the most rewarding thing I've done to my car and I wish I would have done it months ago. I stripped the whole back deck (as shown on House's website) and couldn't believe how "floppy" the area was where the sub bolts on. Just tapping it with a finger resulted in a lot of resonance. I used a Dynamat Extreme door kit, applied to almost the entire back deck. It went on pretty easy, and I borrowed a friend's roller to make sure it got completely stuck down. I also applied deadener to the sub mounting plate.

After I put the car all back together and turned on the stereo I couldn't believe the difference. The sound quality and bass resolution is multiple times better. For really low, repetitive bass it's like a brand new stereo. I can now listen to stuff like Fabolous or The Roots at high volume, where before those discs would vibrate the deck at even very quiet levels. The biggest improvement, though, is in the midbass frequencies. You can really pick out the different sounds, like a kick drum or higher slap bass notes, after the deadener where before the bass was very muddy.

Anyway, it's a great fix, and I agree with Housecor that the way it sounds now is probably what Bose had in mind when the designed the system.

Also, I used my leftover Dynamat to do almost my entire inner trunk lid. That was time well spent, too, because now the trunk closes with a very convincing "thud"...like a nice car should, in my opinion.

Yea, that rear deck rattle annoys the hell outta me. How long did it take you for the whole process pharmer?

Awsome news.....glad to hear that everything went well. How much Dynamat did you purchase (sq. ft)? So the only two places that you applied the Dynamat was on the rear deck and on the trunk lid? Ive seen people apply Dynamat to the entire trunk, but it looked expensive considering that would take quite a bit of mat. Anyhow, Im looking forward to doing the same. The rattling is about to drive me nuts!!

The whole installation process took about 4.0 hours. Sorry that I didn't take pics!

I took my time removing all the trim because I didn't want to break any fasteners or lose anything. I also took lots of time "sticking down" the Dynamat after I applied it so that it would do it's job. I used my friend's Dynamat roller and the ball end of one of my Craftsman screwdrivers in the tight spots, and I think it's stuck down really well. It has to be stuck on completely with a minimum of air bubbles.

I purchased 12 square feet. I had plenty left over after I did the interior rear deck, so I applied more under (trunk side) the Bose sub mounting area where the metal had most room to vibrate. Then I did my entire trunk lid with what I had left over, so I basically used it all up which is what I was going for. I'd say you could easily do 2 Maxima rear decks with one 12 square foot door kit....that'd be nice because two people could split the cost.

Every CD I listen to sounds so much better. This is one mod/fix that has a lot of "bang for the buck".

Is the VIAS issue only for the 2000-2001 ?? Got a 2002 6 speed and dont really feel a ''surge'' of power or something like it at 5000rpm....feels it more at 4000rpm I would say.

I did a trunk rattle fix yesterday only mine was different. I added three layers of dynamat extreme to the plate only. And then an additional two layers to the side of the plate w/o the sub. I had to drill holes through all that dynamat but when I put it all back in maybe 90-95 % of the rattle is gone. It is only there at high volumes of very heavy bass music (disco inferno by 50 cent) I did not have the time to do the entire rear deck but I am pretty happy with the results. Basically in applying the multiple layers of dynamat it made the plate with the sub very, very heave compared to how it was before. I hope this helps some people who do not want to take the entire deck lid apart.
