I am done with this farking car
I have had everything from bad struts to a leaky sunroof and now that my warranty expired the freaking AC stopped working. I am trading this POS for an Lexus tommorow. Big FU to nissan.
Wow man. Tell us how you really feel. You must have just had a lemon or something near one. I've had no complaints about my Max so far. Only problem has been a pinched drain hose from my sunroof. Fixed that in about 45 minutes. Good luck with the Lexus.

Calm down for a minute if possible.
Take a look at the sticky

I have outlined what you need to do.
If you don't want to waste any time then go and get that lexus. I wish you luck. If you have any questions PM me. I just went through arbitration and I am awaiting my verdict.

Forget the Benz. Consumer Reports just confirms what I am hearing from my friends; Mercedes has dropped to mostly black ***** in the reliability department. Their shop trips are far more frequent and somewhat more expensive than for the '04 Maxima.
Mr.Sparkle - If you are talking about a leaky power sunroof, they are supposed to leak. But Nissan has a built-in system in the 6th gen for draining the water through two tubes; one down each 'A' pillar. If you have water inside the cabin from the sunroof, one of your drain tubes has been pinched during assembly, and the dealer should be able to fix this fairly quickly.
Nissan has one of the best AC systems around, and I'm not sure I have seen another 6th gen poster here whose AC just flat out quit. It is truly stinky that it quit right after your warranty expired.
Hearing your agony makes me feel guilty that my 6th gen has been so wonderful. I feel like I'm on cloud nine every time I drive my '04 SL. I can't blame you for being disappointed, but try to understand you just happened to get one of the bad ones. Some of the first 6th gens did have more problems than should have appeared in a $30K vehicle.
Best wishes with whatever you switch to.

and I've never ever seen a broken down Bimmer, Merc, or Lexus on the road
Dont buy a honda first off. Another thing, i think the quality of the MAxima too a huge step downward after 03' I dislike everything about the 04,05 and the new pos 06. ugly as sin first off, they dont run that well, granted they have a 3.5...big deal if the thing breaks all over. Get a 00-03 man.

Leave him alone.
Mommy hasn't changed his diaper yet and he's a little agitated.
We had a 1997 Lexus ES300 in the family till 100,000mi, no problems just oil changes. 30k on the 2002, same thing. Ive seen a new 5 series on the side of the road with its flashers on, possible breakdown..or they just spilled something on the floor or something.
New to MaxOrg...Sorta
Hi all, first time registered so i can post. but have been reading and pulling info from this site since i got my 04 Max back in April 03. I have had almost every problem with my 04...rattle in the rear, shimmies at hwy speeds, etc..etc. After all of those were fixed (mostly by non-nissan dealer's as the nissan guys were too busy trying to get me to spend an av $500 bucks per visit - service kit this and that thing - it was an R&S Strauss Discount Auto guy who finally balanced the tires correctly so that the car runs smooth as any speed), I thought I finally got through all the aches. Of course what happens? Just recently, my car has at several times, had a hard time starting. It cranks, there is electricity, but it shuts down and I have to press the gas pedal and crank it again to get it to start. I know this problem is going to entail a trip to the dreaded Nissan dealer. Yucks! However, in lokking at the TSB's that are listed here..think I see the one that applies for the 04 Maxima regarding starting after a cold soak and the fuel pump needing replacement. Thanks to you guys who have posted the TSB's - they really help with being an informed consumer when going to the dealership! I guess I have one of those bad batch 04 Maxima's - should not have bought mine so early April 03...but I could not wait! Regarding Lexus ES300's, I had one that I ran to 120K Miles - no problems - just regular maintenance... I really wished my Max was as reliable at $31K!!! Thanks again!
Ditto on the forget the Merc....the Lexus is sooo bland too.
Just go see your dealer and get them to change to a New O5 Max or get the new G35...or maybe even the FX 35 it rocks! They are all in about the same price range give and take a couple.
As far as Merc is concerned. All my friends that drive Mercs, and I am talking office friends too all have mucho problems with them. So many problems all the time that it's a bit of a standing joke in the office as in:"Where is Jack this afternoon?" - "Oh, He's at the dealer getting x fixed on his Merc again!
Stick with Japanese man, you can't go wrong...and I always get looks and stares with my Max and my Trenz grille up here in Montreal....I have not seen another modded max yet!

Wow so sorry to hear someone got such bad luck. I guess if I thought I had a lemon I would haved moved to get it covered under the lemon law. Or here's another idea, extended warentee. So far I had 1 issue with my 05. It was minor. My 98 had 1 issue too. No car manufacturer is perfect.
NismoMaxm - You are correct that the Lexus is300 is sick. In a way.
I checked out my neighbor's is300 a year or so ago. It is clearly smaller than the '04 Maxima. It is easily more jittery than the '04 Maxima SE. The back seat is useless for anyone above elementary school. The only reason the 215 HP engine is 'peppy' is because it doesn't have much car to pull. The Lexus is300, unlike most Lexuses, is a pocket-rocket (well, semi-rocket), not a family sedan in any sense of the word.
Regardless of any quality differences, anyone actually comparing the Lexus is300 to the 6th gen Maxima is automotively challenged. Apples and oranges. The first five Maxima gens were more sporty than luxury. The 6th gen is still sporty, but more luxurous and roomy; especially the SL, which is a very comfortable ride in a sporty family sedan. It is a fantastic car for long trips. The Lexus is300 is not a car for any long family trip, unless the kids are small and love the wildest rides at Six Flags.
You also ballyhooed the 5th gen Maxima. I happen to own both 5th gen and 6th gen Maximas. I love them both. But before I bought my '04 SL, I compared every detail in the 6th gen with my 5th gen. I listed thirty-four (34!) improvements/additional features in the 6th gen that were meaningful to me.
I will grant that, based on posts here, it seems the 6th gen had quality problems early on that should have been addressed more quickly by Nissan. However, I expected that to happen, what with moving production to the US and completely redesiging the car at the same time.
Having bought my '04 SL late in the '04 run, I have had a very good experience. In fact, in my 56 years of driving, I have never had a more enjoyable vehicle.
You have your opinion, I have mine. Nothing wrong with that.

To add to lightonthehill's point about moving production to the US at the same time as a major redesign, I've also read somewhere that the new Nissan plants are some of the most highly automated plants in the world (by a large degree), and I would bet that it would take longer to 're-program' a series of robots/computers to assemble something differently than to tell a human the same (or how to use the assembler differently...). So, that might also be another point that oculd account for the long lag in addressing small assembly problems.
Makes sense. On that note, I have an '02. I want to give it to the wife and buy myself a new car. I limited mysef to AWD or FWD. I was thinking '05 Max. My options are TSX (too slow), TL (looks too similar to TSX for $6K more), Legacy GT ($30K for a Subaru), and G35 AWD (don't like exterior look). Be careful, the Lexus IS 300 is due for a remodel. I'm looking for an unbiased opinion

I love my 00 and 05 Max. I am an Automotive Marketing Management major and Nissans are great cars. My family has owned at least 1 Nissan since 1980. Cars are machines and they will break... the more you paid for the machine the more it's gonna cost you to maintain it. The only problems I have had with Nissans have been by my negligence.

Take your time car shopping. Try to go through forums like this one for other cars and see what people have to say. Observe trends. If you have 30K to burn and must have awd look at the G35 and the legacy.
