Exhaust piping size

Can someone tell me the inlet diameter is for a stock VG muffler? And are the mufflers for sale at ebay any good?

2". And the question about the muffler is a very very broad question. Put the link in here and let us know which one you are looking at.

I think most of the ones ebay sells are the ricer series... Of course there are a couple that aren't.

Most mufflers are a 2 1/2" inlet. You can get some in a 2 1/4" inlet as well, but I believe 2 1/2" is the standard

So our piping to the muffler is 2" or 2.25"?

As for the mufflers, I was thinking of something like these... Yeah I know they're rice, but they're cheaper than OE ones (unless someone knows a shop in Toronto West that can source it cheaper... If there is, I might even do my Y pipe as well):

2" is the OEM size. Most aftermarket mufflers offer 2.25 or 2.5

$6???? Man that's no Titanium muffler. That's a hunk of Junk.

Word of advice... save your money. That thing will break in no time. Plus the noise will drive you crazy, especially with that y-pipe.

Save up for a flowmaster, Magnaflow, Ravin, Geddy, or Pacesetter. All those don't have that ricey sound, and all are good quality mufflers. Check with internetautomar, he sells a lot of them.

a $6 muffler is just that , a muffler that costs $6 to ship. which means that it doesn't weigh much and that it probably has little to no sound dampening material inside of it.
you might as well weld on a coffee can.

I think a coffee can would do better... It's cheaper, but you get more out of it...

I had an ebay coffee can once. I likeit, but I thnk they made a mistake when they sent it because it was an discontinued janspeed. I really liked the sound though. Can't say the same for the days I had head aches.

The muffler i have (Apex-i universal muffler) sounds pretty dang good. There is no ricey drone or bumble bees. With the warpspeed Y, I am still able to drive it and be quiet, but when I floor the sucker the muffler sounds absolutely beautiful. It isn't anywhere near as loud as that one exhaust clip of the magnaflow muffler floating around here. Those mufflers are pretty inexpensive on ebay too.

A muffler welded to your stock exhaust will do nothing or very close to nothing as far as performance, all it will do is change the sound.

If better sound is what you want, then you need to buy a decent muffler like kcidmill suggested. Maybe ask Brian (internetautomart) if he has a conservatively priced muffler he can recommend to you for a better sound, then you can have it welded to your stock exhaust.

If you are serious about increasing the flow of your exhaust, you will see good gains from an aftermarket y-pipe (warpspeed or cattman) and some gains from a cat-back if you move up to 2.5" piping. The stock cat actually flows well, but you can get a slight gain from putting in a high flow cat.

The best thing to do is save your money. Buy a y-pipe for around $200. Then save some more money and get a complete cat-back at your local respected muffler shop. Pipe, resonator and muffler installed should run you around $200 and up. The "up" part will usually depend on how nice of a muffler you want.

If you have the a'pex muffler I am thinking off ebay it isnt real.. I dont think so anyway since I know that the N1 style of the real one is big in the fc3s (2nd gen rx7) world and for the real ones they are a couple hundred US.The way to tell the real one from the knockoff is the actual N1 "style" universal A'pex muffler has the company logo stamped into the rear on the "tailpipe" section of it. The real N1 is a vehicle specific unit and has no logo stamped in.

Just to clarify they offer the N1 (named after race) and also the N1 "Style" universal muffler. That is the only universal muffler A'pex offers.

If you have an actual A'pex Integration one then it is a different story since they are a super nice muffler

I am a nerd

yeah, Redmax, I am hesitant on the cat-back because I have heard about loss in torque so that is at the back of my mind, and bottom of mod list (though if it is honestly worth my time, a custom B-pipe with my current muffler should be cheap). I bought the car with the apex muffler on there, and from what I can tell it looks like factory exhaust piping.

My muffler does have that stamp on the back, but i thought i saw those on ebay for pretty cheap (under 100). I will take pics of it, and the piping to make sure, but I have the GXE this week. Also, the tailpipe part is nice and small, and not all blinged out (I don't clean it much so it blends in) so I don't portray some silly rice boy with the fricken HUGE muffler with a 4 inch chrome tip.

Yeah I'm not looking for noise... I just want to replace my stock muffler cuz the heat shield is coming off and its probably responsible for frying my o2 sensor too. I was thinking if I can get a good price for Y+muffler I'll do both.

I put 2.5" from the cat back, and didn't loose any torque. Pre Fab cat backs are a waste of money if you ask me. The B-pipe helps reduce noise, but I found actually getting rid of it worked well with my Ravin. Gave it an even deeper richer tone, and a marginal increase in overall loudness.

I take it you have never heard a GReddy before...

You are right that they are overpriced, but if you have the money to blow, the sound is great. I bought mine used for considerably less than the retail price.

Now, if I could only get the thing installed

I've heard greddy exhaust before... didn't like it. I love my Ravin. Gives that right inbetween mix of old mucle car chug and import tone.

I spent $180 on my muffler, and $90 on the piping. Lets see Greddy bring their prices down that low...
