Strange sounds, Trans?

When I am not in gear and off the clutch I get a strange kind of hissing sound. If I put the clutch down ALL the way, it goes away, as soon as I bring the clutch back up about an inch or two it makes the hiss sound again. I believe it does it in gear as well. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? car runs fine, clutch does not slip at all.

i think i might have something like this as well
when the car is cold mainly, it sounds a bit like a grind but when i put the clutch in you can hear the noise stop as it slows spinning. its pretty quiet though and you couldnt notice it over anything else unless you obsess about the noises your car makes, like us.
i wonder what it is too

wether my car is in gear or not, has no affect on this sound as far as i can tell. and it happens whether the car is cold or warm

i doubt its the thowout bearing. i have the same problem and i just replaced my cluch and thowout bearing. didn't fix the noise. it has been suggested to me that is the input shaft bearing. either way the tranny does need to be dropped. its not that hard acutally un less you aare like me and have a rusty underbody. mad the bolts hard.

I had the same noise. Eventually, the noise got louder and louder and became very difficult to shift at times. I ended up having to drop about 1200 for a trans. rebuild. Hopefully it holds up. It feels great now that it's fixed though
