Grrrrrr, How can i fix this?!?!

hello fellow orgers, i have a quick question to ask. my max is starting a disterbing trend!! everytime i do sort of a "rolling stop" my max tends to struggle to shift into the proper gear generally when i come to a complete stop i'm fine, but if i have to encounter a series of stop signs, it's horrible. what can i do to fix this if anything?? BTW i have a 1999 auto tranny. thanks for the help in advance.

As long as you obey the law and come to a complete stop at a STOP sign you'll be fine. Its your car's way to keep you in line with the laws.

It's just the way the automagic works in our cars.

The ONLY remedy is 5-spd conversion...

Does it shift smoothly otherwise? ie when it changes up a gear, does it do it quickly or does it start to change drag abit then change.. could be your clutch packs in the auto or maybe just old trans fluid... if its not any of the above try driving with your O/D off.... and see if that changes the way it shifts into proper gear

If a 5 speed conversion is my only hope, i guess i'm **** outta luck (that would be way too time consuming and costly) i notice that when i first start up the car and drive, it seems to shift fine, but as i drive longer, and the car subsequently warms up, it begins to start dragging, so to speak, from first gear on, if at any point is slow down and don't come to a complete stop and try to accelerate again. and btw what are clutch packs in an auto tranny?? how do you know if you have a problem with them?

From when my old auto died, you notice it with slow/dragging shifts.. if you auto trans oil is old, then your clutch packs will take the brunt of it.

I'd put money on a trans flush, your oil is heating up and separating, autos are hydraulic based so bad fluid = bad shifting.. check the oil with your auto dip stick should be nice red, if its brown, then its burnt

This is normal, But I hear that adding a grounding kit smooths this out and the auto shifts more appropriately. I am going to soon try it out and see if the rumors are true.

A tranny cooler would probably help too.

i actually though about getting a tranny cooler since apparently my max runs ok when it cold outside or hasn't been running for a while. how much would one of those cost?? where from? just curious......

It sounds fairly normal to me. My 99 autoslug tranny does the same thing. It really feels like the trans never downshifts on rolling stops. Try re-accelerating in 3rd gear from a rolling stop and you manual guys will know what it feels like.

My tranny only has 38k on it and does the same thing, plus I asked this same question a couple months ago and was told it's normal. Unless your trans feels sluggish even from a complete stop while warm, then I wouldn't stress over it. A tranny flush and fill rarely hurts though.

thanks theshawn, i feel somewhat better now that i have an idea of what's going on in that max auto tranny and what it might take to cure it or give me peace of mind. and for the record, i couldn't agree with you more when you said that it felt like starting for 3rd gear from a rolling stop in a manual transmission!! just to give you manual gives guys an idea of what were talking about. i couldn't have said it any better than that.

I felt the same relief when everyone here helped me by telling me it was just the sluggo auto trany they stuck in an otherwise great car. Once the rpms go above 2k upon reacceleration then it kicks in an goes. Welcome to the club.
