Side impact was only offered with the leather package. Actually I think it was only available in the 99 model year. (i could be wrong)

I had them in my 98 GLE. They do only come with leather and they helped cushion my passenger when I was broad-sided. Very expensive to replace once they've deployed though.

I wouldn't recommend putting them in on your own. Airbags are very tricky with all the sensors, etc. and you don't want to run the risk of them deploying when they're not suppossed to. They should only be installed bt the factory. They are just little chest/torso airbags, they don't protect your head.

They're the worst. I have them in my 98. They cause the AIRBAG lamp to flash. What a nightmare for someone who doesn't know about them and they buy a 98-99 used after the owner reset the airbag computer. Goodbye $700-1000 per side. That $5300 used fully-loaded 99 all-optioned SE suddenly cost you $7300.

all you have to do to make those go away is to run a diagnostic on the airbag light, similar to the ecu diagnostic, and just check the connections to the airbag in question. That's usually the case, instea of replacing the airbag, which would cost up to 700 bux..

btw, i have them in my 98 GLE, and they make my airbag light go off
