side effects of straight pipe (test pipe)??

Does putting on a straight pipe and getting rid of the cat throw any error codes to the ECU or any other problems I should know about. Thanks.

the main problems would be that it results in zero gains and pollutes the air....

just get a high flow cat, but youd probably gain the most 1hp

my friend with an eclipse GSX is running a straight pipe, and it smells like an old muscle car, very gassy.

99 cali, warpspeed y (mandrel) + custom maxima resonated test pipe, stock cat-pack. smells gassy when it's sitting there and you're outside, other then that the sound is pretty much stock, alittle raspier. no ecu codes

I believe it...it is basically the same concept as adding an aftermarket y-pipe which removes the pre-cats from the stock y-pipe.

He's kidding.

There's no need for a NA car to remove or upgrade the cat. Your car is not producing enough waste gas that the cat will be a restriction. If you insist on following this route and not throw a code, you will need an O2 simulator to trick the ECU.

No you dont. I think it depends on the year of your car and the location of the O2 sensor.
Ive been running a straight pipe for years and ahve had no codes, but I can confirm that smelly exhaust,...rotten eggs!
If you cat is operating fine, just stay with it. The straight pipe is a cheap fix if you have a faulty cat.
But you will fail emissions with it.

So what did you do with the O2 sensor that's in your cat?

I did it and I regret it, smells like pure gas comin straight from the pump while it idles and the noise just gets flat out annoying after a week.

No its not the same concept as adding a y-pipe, the gains in the y-pipe come from straightening out the flow http://www.motorvate.ca/mvp.php/519

This ain't the 70's,man . The cats take a lot less power than those old setups did. Nowadays, all a "test pipe" does is gain .5 horsepower in exchange for a trip to the impound lot. With the use of Y-pipes, why would you need a Straight-setup anyways?

I guess I have had good luck with mine or something. No nasty smell, no god-awful exhaust moan, a slight gain in performance.....the only down-side I have is that my CEL comes on and when it does it drops my 1/8th E.T.'s by 2 tenths

Thats what mine smells like, and I have a Hiflow cat.

My old test pipe smelled even more gassy. Keine Eier, and no socks. Not really noticable in HP though.
