Fuel Management on a 4th Gen

I got a 95 Maxima, and it's the first v6 i've ever had. My tank lasts on average about a week . I was wondering if there was someway I could Mod my Max to be more fuel efficient (aside from weight reduction). Any suggestions?

Lay off the throttle.

You could for, ****s and giggles, change the injectors to smaller injectors.

When was the last time you did a 30k mile service on it? If you don't know what it is, look in the stickies. Fuel efficiency is based on many things: ignition, timing, fuel delivery, sensors, etc. Read the FAQ's first.

Dexter, saying you need to buy gas once a week is absolutely meaningless! What type of driving do you do , how fast do you drive and what MPG are you getting? I have a 95 Maxima SE, 5-speed, and I used to get 19MPG when commuting 11 miles each way at no more than 40 mph, with lights, traffic etc. On a highway trip, at no more than 75 mph on cruise control, I routinely can get 28-31 mpg depending on how many passengers (luggage etc) I have and whether or not the A/C is on, and how much climbing I'm doing.

The lowest I've ever had on a tank is about 350 miles when commuting, albeit with the light on for some time before filling up. A lot or orgers maintain the incremental cost of buying premium fuel will be made up by improved fuel economy and performance.

Given the additives in Canadian gas, I can't readily confirm that but it may well be the case in the US. My car doesn't run particularly well on US89 octane fuel, but it does on Cdn89 octane fuel.

The previous owner of my max, used to put 89. The car runs less than 300 full tank. A friend told me to put 91, and tried, since then I get 300+ mpg. The only thing I replaced, sparkplugs from NGK titanium to copper. Haven't get a chance to clean TB, fuel filter, etc.

It actually says 91 octane in the manual. However Many US Gas Stations only provide 87m 89, or 93. I have always put 93 in my max. I rountinly get around 400 miles per tank with mixed city and highway driving.

It says to use at least 91. 93 will by no means hurt it. Change air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, Check codes etc.

you are right. at first, i thought i'm f-ing up my max by using 93 octane since the car was brand new. i just reread the manual and i'm feel better now that it says "for maximum vehicle performance, the use of unleaded premium gasoline is recommended".

350 - 370 is okay for city driving or say 90% city/10% highway, but is nothing to write home about for any greater % of highway driving than that.

i think i need to clean some stuff.. i do at least 75% highway/23% city / 2% sport driving.

Based on that mix, and providing you don't drive too fast, I would expect you would get in excess of 400 miles to a tank, and quite possibly more like 425 - 450.

so, far i've calculated 27 mpg (more or less) and the fuel injectors are fine, the prob is that some weeks (when it's warm) gas lasts longer than when it's cold (maybe it's cuz i use the heater I dunno), and I use 93 octane fuel everytime. Smaller fuel injectors would make gas last longer but it would make the car slower (and I don't want that).

i guess the best suggestion would be, get use to it. You drive a car that has a V6 in it ( one of the best if not the best v6 ever made if i might add). it has two extra cylinders then a civic so i guess you really cant exspect 30 miles pergallon. The car is running off technology that is a decade old. so the fuel economy isnt the best.

Hey no worrys man when its cold out you burn more gass then when its warm out. thats normal

I only use 89, and I get about 300miles to a full tank, that includes city driving as well as hwy, Its too expensive to use 93, but 87 isnt a good idea for the max.

I know you live in NY, but that's pretty lousy fuel economy. Has the light come on at 300 miles? What mpg do you get?

Rhode Island Traffica isnt too bad tho, even city driving is fairly continuous

I drive aout 30 miles one way to work each day and I drive at least 75mph. (the highways I take have 65mph speed limit) I always get at least 380 miles before the gas light comes on. If I drive a little slower, the light comes on about 400-410. I have a heavy foot so I think I average 25mpg.

I guess my foot is heavier since I average 21mpg.
