57K miles- lots of work needed

Car- 2002 Nissan Maxima 6 speed
Notable modifications- Eibach springs (chopped fronts), KYB GR2 struts, Berk intake w/midpipe, 18x8.5" wheels

I took my car in for the following issues today, before my powertrain warranty expires:

1. I am burning/losing oil. I am using Mobil 1 full synthetic 10W30 and I lose about half of my oil after 3,000 miles.
2. Transmission- car pops violently out of gear while accelerating heavily, but only in reverse. This is a problem I have been experiencing since I purchased the car.

Diagnosis:
Transmission needs to be replaced. While the transmission was torn apart, the tech said that the flywheel was in "terrible" condition, which is probably the cause of the loss of oil.

End result:
New transmission (free)
New clutch ($200)
Clutch labor ($100)
New flywheel ($500)
New front motor mount ($200)
2 CV boots (covered by nice technician even though car is lowered. Said he will cover them if I get the motor mount done).
Total cost: $1100, give or take

What flywheel did you put on? That Fidanza? It would be cool to hear how you like it.

Flywheel has NOTHING to do with you loosing oil. There is a seal behind the flywheel- rear main seal, and if that was leaking (only see the leak once you take the tranny and clutch/flywheel off) that would explain why you would loose oil.

That's what I thought. I want to see this flywheel. It had better be torn to a million pieces for it to be replaced.

I am just having them put the OEM flywheel in. My car is in a million pieces right now and they can fix it tomorrow by using OEM parts.

Here is what has been done so far. I go back at the end of the week for more work.

Inner left front CV boot split. Replaced (n/c)
Left front axle noisy. Replacing Friday (n/c)
Inner right front CV boot split. Replaced (n/c)
Front engine mount- $113
Labor- engine mount- $100
Supply charge- $24
Transmission replaced- (n/c)
Crank position sensor recall (n/c)
Clutch and flyweel replacing and labor- $868.81
Engine consuming oil- Running consumption test this Friday

Total after tax- $1177.91

While spending $1K at the dealership is never fun, I feel like I got a good deal because they replaced so much stuff. I am good to go for a while now.

Usually if you have a CV boot torn they replace the hold joint. It's a PITA to just replace the boot. Alot easier to replace the joint. Plus less labor.

I agree with you that for what was replaced you paid a fair price. After all you didn't have to pay a couple grand to replace the tranny.{Like dude why would you need to accelerate heavily in reverse so much?}

The oil consumption using Mobile 1 is troubling particulartly that volume. I would think that if it was a seal leaking you would see some drip in the driveway or garage, no?

These are good cars. If your take care of it you can drive it (not beat it) for 200K. My 91 still runs at 90% of what it did when new and the original clutch was just recently replaced.........after teaching both my kids to drive a stick on that car .

I think you got a good deal out of this. You're going to have to shell out a grand every few years particularly if you're working long hours and don't have the time.... or the proper tools ....A flywheel swap is not that easy for a first timer even if some 17 yr old can do it in 15 min.

Keeping it for a while. At least another year or two. I have been really happy with the car overall, especially the 3.5L.
