Air Conditioning

Tried it for the first time today, and realized it didn't work. The light comes on, but no cold air comes through the vents. How can I tell if I just need a recharge? Also, I have a 90 SE with a good AC system, and my new car is a 93 SE. Can I install the AC from the 90 in the 93?

Does the AC compressor engage? Is the hose from that to cabin cooling at all. =open hood...

Couple of reasons:
IF one of the fan relays do not function, or fluid level low, No AC.

Similar box is also under VE hood...

do you have the tools to check for a leak?
if not, then let someone else do it for like $65

Once it leaks out, that often means that there is a seal bad somewhere and it will continue to leak out. Refilling it will work, but for how long, it's hard to tell. It is best to have a professional look it over and replace the worn parts.

but i dont know if it leaked out or if it was just used up. there is no pressure in the line at all, and the radiator fans and the air compressor dows not click on, dam $65 seems like alot.

$65 is well worth it. I don't believe it just got used up. There was a leak somewhere. Professional will inject a dye and charge system and see where leak is coming from without guessing. Then tell you what needs to be replaced whether it be a line/o-ring compressor condensor etc. Just make sure you don't get a rip off a/c shop that tries to sell you everything.

www.tiresplus.com has a coupon that will check your A/C system for $25. And the A/C system is like the brake system, the freon just doesnt run low. If its not blowing cold air (taking heat away actually) and everything else works then you have a leak somewhere.

Yeah, like rawmax said, it wont just get used up generally - my 82 Lude has never had the A/C service and it is still pretty cold. Take it to a shop and let them take a look.

"freon" is not a consumable like gasoline. it's more like oil or anti-freeze in that if there's no leak, it'll always be there. however unlike oil or antifreeze, it doesn't lose it's cooling properties.

This is probably a dumb question, but my FSM that came with the car does not cover anything newer than 91. I am new to all of these things, so which one is the compressor and how can I tell if it is engaging. I fealt the pipes, and they all feel warm.

WarM pipes mean --->No cold

Engine front, left side where all belts are. Go look, smbdy hits the AC on. If nothin happens, then compressor does not engage AND pipes feel warm like any...

My Compressor is kinda noisy, me can hear ooutside as car idles. Its like the engine: noise is a good indication.

Btw. For ME, WarM pipes mean --->MORE cold

Thats the desTiny fro all manmade.

Luckily ? here the gloBall warMing -hoax means colder weather. lol. Here I need A/C 2weeks per year. So the car has been junk for 20yrs before the compressor fails...

But that hoax has been very profitrable, just thinkabout only the fluid price gouging; who gets those zillions? Greenpiss at least is well oiled... http://www.junkscience.com/

if the level of freon is at the correct level you should hear the compressor clutch cycle on and off...loud click.

you should also see a slight bubbling in the sigh glass of the reciever dryer.

then you should also feel the hose that wiking mentioned to be cold.

the compressor switch is also smart enough not to turn on if your freon level is low...so either way you have a leak somewhere.

if you're asking then don't do it.

your 90 runs on R12 which you can't get...(i'm assuming you didn't convert)....bring it to professional and let them take care of it.

R12 is not available to anybody, only to those certified (has the certification) in air conditioning. R134 is available anywhere! i.e. Target store.
