Questions on 2000 SE before purchase...

Sorry if these have been discussed recently. I could not find answers to any of these questions in the how to's or FAQ's. I am currently looking at a 2000 SE that is in overall good shape except for the interior. Here are my ?'s.

1. I noticed that the steering wheel had a cover on it. I forgot to ask owner, but I am assuming it is worn badly underneath it. How tough are these to replace? I'm guessing that I could find one from a wrecked car, but is replacing the steering wheel and messing with the airbag something that I can do?

2. Seats are charcoal cloth, and have a few cigarette burns. I posted a similar question on 3rd gen forum for my car and got some suggestions, but any other ideas on how to fix those. Just wondering how much it might cost at an interior shop to fix it...

3. Also noticed that the owner only had a key, no remote. Did 2000 SE's come standard with remote entry, if so what will it cost me to replace it if the owner has lost the remotes......

Thanks in advance for any help.

Current 3rd gen owner looking to step up......

1) you can take the cover off to see for yourself if the steering wheel is worn out that badly
2) this may be a pain to fix- depending on how many burns are there on the seats, and what you can live with.
3) all Maximas, regardless of their trim level, came equipped with remotes.

Usually, when a car has a bad interior, it means that the owner took the same care of mechanics. Everything you listed could be taken care of in under $300. What kind of mileage on the car, whats the asking price, is there a maintenance history, and is it a original owner car?

Add a little more money and get 5.5 gen. Or else you might regret it.

The interior is a clear indication of how well the previous guy maintained all areas of the car. If he didn't care about the interior which he/she sits in and has to look at everyday, do you think he cared about the maintenance of his engine, tranny etc that he doesn't see at all? Look for another car IMO.

It is a 2 owner vehicle. 85k miles, owner is asking 10k, but is willing to accept less. Its a little rough, but for the money I might be willing to work on the interior. I figure I could always go with leather seats out of a wrecked car later on, or some leather covers as well.

Do yourself a big favor and take a pass on this car! There are better ones out there, particularly if you're a non-smoker.

I take it leather is not a factor in your decision, but burnt cloth seats should be!

Yeah, I think you may be right. I'm seriously considering buying off ebay, seems to be some good deals out there.

Be weary of ebay as well. I have a few friends who have gone that route and 1 of 3 of them got what they were expecting from the car's ad. I really don't know the details of their experiences, but always, always be careful with ebay ads.

10g for a base model 2000 SE with no remotes, bad steering wheel, and cig burns.... what a rip off.

You can easily find a fully loaded 00-01 max for around that price in much better condition.

Any of the 5 or 5.5 gens you can buy the transponder (remote) off of EBay for a few $$ and you can program it to your car within a few minutes.
