Me and my friend was racing around N.Y. I have a 97 max auto
and was really taking off from at the stop lights. I later noticed the Check engine light go on. I then go to do the ECU diagnosis which read 0505 which mean nothing found, when I noticed the O/D light blinking. I did a seach and found out that it was the fail safe. I drive around with the O.D. off all the time in the City. Did I mess something up. The car still rides the same, but is this a sign of Tranny malfunctioning. Do I have to go back to babying my max. Who else has this happen to. I calling Don in texas for a valve body job, cause this ridiculous. Should have
bought a stick. I use to drive my 91 honda accord harder than this.

A quote from the Owner's Manual...

Fail-safe
When the fail-safe operation occurs, the next time the key is turned to the ON position, the O/D OFF light will blink for approximately 8 seconds after coming on for 2 seconds. While the vehicle can be driven under these circumstances please note that the gears in the automatic transmission will be locked in third gear.

If the vehicle is driven under extreme conditions, such as excessive wheel spinning and subsequent hard braking the fail-safe may be activated. This will occur even if all electrical circuits are functioning properly. In this case, turn the ignition key OFF and wait for 3 seconds. Then turn the key back on the the ON position. The vehicle should return to its normal operating conditions. If it does not return to its normal operating condition, have your Nissan dealer check the transmission and repair if necessary.

Your jackrabbit starts are an abuse of the vehicle. That flashing fail-safe warning light is the transmission's way of telling you stop this nonsense!

I don't expect Don's VB mod will avoid this condition. He can advise you on that point.

Re: Stop this nonsense!

I had this problem. After taking Daniel's advice, I turned the key to the ON position and the light didn't flash. However, sometimes my light will still flash when I start the car, and I will have to turn it off and put it in the ON position so that it won't flash the next time I start up. Daniel, is there any way to make this go away or do I just have to deal with it?
