Gen 2 and Gen 1 HP Autowork STS...

Whats the difference between the two Generations of the sts. I went to the website and I understand that the Gen2 has an additional piece that is supposed to provide easier shifting into reverse, but does that mean the Gen1 provides notchy shifts into reverse? I just purchased a used one from Jrod1014 and it only came with only one piece, so Im wondering whats up. I emailed tech support at HP Autoworks to see if I infact need the additional piece and if it can be purchased additionally. So, I was wondering for those of you with the Gen1 sts, what did you do? Did you all just use the one piece, or did you all purchase the additional piece and how much was it. Thanks in advance for everyones help.

I am not 100% sure but I think the second piece is to align the shifter so it stays in the middle. With the one piece your shifter would be off, not centered.

someone chime in and correct me if I am wrong.

I saved my money for headers, and went with the Free STS.

Thanks for the reply 2K2MerlotSE....I forgot to mention that about the shifter stalk being centered. So if I dont use the 2nd piece,...my shifter is going to be off center?...is this a big deal/uncomfortable when shifting? Also, how rough is the shift into reverse compared to the "smoother shifting" produced be the Gen 2 sts. Id love to hear from those of you that have installed the sts without the "additional piece." Also, Ive heard that it is necessary to use lithium grease for easier shifts...but where do you spray. Pics showing where to spray would be greatly appreciated.

I dont have one, but from what I read it will sit forward, towards the ashtray. I also read the shifting is firmer. Hopefully someone with experience will give you the info you need. Try searching if you haven't there is tons of info out there.

good luck

I have just the 1st stage (part that attached under the hood). The throws are about 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inches shorter and the shifting is smooth. Not rough going into reverse either. I did not use any grease.

The shifter has stayed centered from left to right but the neutral position is slightly forward of where it was when stock. I do not consider this a problem but rather an advantage. With this position, my arm clears the armrest better.
