Nifty camera mount for autocross....

I figured I'd post this here since new ideas have been light recently in the 5th gen forum, and nobody really goes in the autocross forum......

...so since I'm low on money for "real" mods, decided to make a new camera mount, giving me the option of using several mounting locations. The primary locations are outside the passenger rear window, and about a foot back between the seats. Also has some other mounting points that I might use too.

Made of aluminum tubing and random hardware. I also filled it with foam to reduce vibrations. It's not pretty, but it's strong as hell, only weighs about 2 pounds, and does the job! So...here it is:

It attaches to the passenger headrest. Here's how....in this pic all the bolts are not tightened up yet

One one side I have a diagonal arm that has three mount points. In this pic the ball mount isn't fitted, but you can see where the camera will go, roughly

The best part is the arm that comes out the window, for some "side of car" shots. It's somewhat adjustable, and the door can be opened without hitting the camera mount, provided the passenger seat is far back

I think it will capture a cool angle of the front wheel and course when autocrossing and road racing. The arm has wingnuts attaching it, as you can see, so it can be removed when I'm just using the inside part....

This was the original mount, made by Paul (Requin6) for me, by the way:

yeah...it will also have a safety strap attached to a hardpoint inside the car, so if it comes off the arm somehow, it will just hang there and not go flying off onto the racecourse!

Looks great!

Then get a foam sleeve for the camera so it won't break the camera or scratch your car.

not a bad idea...Might have to look into that, if I can figure out a way to keep it secured also. In any case, the setup is VERY secure (I tested it by pulling really hard on hit and banging it around, and it didn't budge)...plus the camera I'm using on the outside is one I picked up used for dirt cheap (it's big and ugly, but if it breaks I won't really care much)...the one in the pics is my buddy's (very expensive) camera which will only be used on the inside.

Try some foam padding and zip ties.

What are the bars made of? 1/2" square tube?

I have the original stickypod. I had great ideas for it but never used it. The twisty isoltated road I was going to film on is now covered with lights and stores.

Yeah, i'll eventually get a stickypod for roof-mount, but I wanted to setup something for other angles....that, and I can't justify $100 for a camera mount at this time
