Tinted or autodim sideview mirrors?

Since everyone in this area has a freakin SUV, driving on the highway is a test of how good you are at avoiding getting blinded through your sideview mirrors, no matter how you aim them. Anyhow, I've noticed that some luxury cars have green-tinted exterior (sideview) mirrors. Has anyone here done that to their car? Is it a tint that could be applied, or is it "built-in" to the mirror glass itself? Also was thinking that it would be kind of cool if the outside mirrors were auto-dim like the rearview interior mirror is...Thoughts?

Discuss....

Those on VW's and BMW's are part of the glass (the tint that is). It's similar to how the tint on your windshield works and in the case of 5.5 gens the rest of the windows (although to a less noticeable degree).

I'm sure you could use regular tint film but that probably won't hold up very well to the elements.

i would be interested as well if anyone has info. i find myself constantly aiming the side mirrors to the ground anytime on the highway at night. this of course is not the safest method to avoid the light so if anyone has any insight then it would be great. i have never had this issue with any other car and just figured i was at the perfect height for it aim straight to my mirrors.

here's an alternate solution as well, though it involves some minor effort every time you drive at night...

Yet another reason why i miss my dads BMW X5... whenever the interior rearview mirror dimmed at night the outside ones would do the same. There was never any glare in that car. i miss that car so much

auto parts stores typically carry static cling tint that could be cut to size and used like that link. i actually picked up some the other day to use during the summer on a window in my house that was allowing heat to trip the thermostat constantly. it was 20% and is reusable. 10 bucks for 24"X60" if i remember correctly. i guess you could keep two precut pieces in the car but it would be nice to find something that would hold up to the elements on the mirrors themself.

by the way, the auto-dimming mirrors (inside and out) are also known as "electrochromatic"......we need to get a company to make tinted electrochromatic heated turn signal mirrors for the maxima

If your windows are tinted, this still bothers you?? My suggestion would be to have the windows tinted this will help a little! Great idea though!!

you forgot power folding

i guess it's just me, but i really never notice this at night...i do check my rear-view mirrors quite often, and here in the hill country of texas, there is probably a 100:1 truck to car ratio, but i'm just never really bothered by it....i do notice a difference in the amount of light that shows in the auto-dimming inside rear-view mirror and the outside mirrors, but unless somebody has their brights on, i dont ever pay any attention to it....

Tinted, but VA legal is 50% on the fronts, so it's not very dark....and no, I'm not going to put on any illegal tint....Fairfax County WILL get you for it....

HAH I have 20% on my front windows, illegal I know and it really does help with the lights at night. But with the weather being so nice lately I like to cruise with the windows down, and then all the glare problems start.

It used to be the case where the mirror glass was actually tinted blue (go look at an old BMW or Merc if you dont believe me) to cut glare, especially in the dark, however since headlights have changed (as has the color of their light output) this technology became outdated. So, they switched to auto dimming sideview mirrors. Same principle as the rearview, but outside the car. The green hue you are noticing is actually the back coating of the first mirror glass reflecting off the front of the second. All the luxury brands (except infiniti and acura, correct me if im wrong) come with the autodim sideview mirrors on the mid and high end models (even on the lower end for BMW and Merc). It would be cool if someone made a nice kit for maximas.....

This may be a solution. I just installed a set of power folding sideview mirrors with LED turn signals. The mirrors have a green tint on the glass that seems to reduce the glare from vehicles. Here are some pics:

but the bmw and audi side mirrors start to distort colors and look like water marks, so be careful guys with what you apply on the mirror. when a car is blinding me, i lean away from the beam towards the middle of the car, those are my mirror tints.

I don't think they sell a heated version. Sycefiro would probably be able to answer that question for you.

the auto dim side view mirrors ( plus power folding )came on the 6th gen Maxima. if the cheaper name brand nissan came with it, Infiniti has to come with it to.
